| screamingferret | Your Recommended Movies What 10 films would you recommend to everyone, and why? My friends and I did this a while ago, and it proved quite interesting as we ended up with a very varied and eclectic list of films that one or more of us considered essential viewing, but most of us hadn't seen. That, and I need some new films to watch ;)So, here are mine. 1. The Wicker Man. This is absolutely the best British horror film ever made, and worth it for Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward's performances alone. 2. The Silence of the Lambs. One of the best serial killer thrillers going, and far superior to most of those that came after it. 3. Requiem For A Dream. A year in the life of a heroin addict (and his mother). Watch it in cheerful surroundings, because it will get to you. 4. Gods and Monsters. Ian McKellan and Brendan Fraiser both give great performances in this one. Based on the life of horror director James Whale. 5. Old Boy. The plot is absolutely gripping, the martial arts are brutal and the guy that plays Oh Dae Su is fantastic. One of my favourite Asian films. 6. Ong-Bak. Worth it for the Thai boxing, but the whole film is excellent. 7. Remains of the Day. A story about repressed love in an English stately home. Anthony Hopkins as Stevens the butler is fantastic. 9. Versus. It has zombie Yakuza. 10. Moulin Rouge. Visually stunning, great songs and the cast is pretty damn good too. A mate of mine described it as a mushroom trip without the aftertaste. To make it 11: Session 9. An American horror film that owes much of its style to Asian films like Ringu and The Eye. |
| Freya_Crescent_II | ............I don't know which ones I would recommend. I'm better at that with books and video games. And I would be bad at putting them in order!^-^' Akira is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, though. Without Akira, no Matrix. |
| screamingferret | Still haven't seen that. I've been meaning to watch it for years :( |
| Freya_Crescent_II | Meh. Got the dubbed and un-dubbed/original japanese in a box set! Very, very good. WATCH IT!!!!!!!! |
| screamingferret | Are the subs any good? I dislike most efforts to dub anime into English. |
| Freya_Crescent_II | They're okay. Better than the ones to Spirited Away. THey were awful...^_^' IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY!!!!!!YAY! |
| screamingferret | Happy birthday for yesterday ;) I was thinking of the subs on the Chinese import of Gungrave. They were hilariously bad. "My jam techs are good," Harry says in (I think) a scene in the second episode. "Wha?" we said. "Rewind that..." Needless to say, it wasn't his fruit preserving skills he was talking about. There's jam, and then there's jam... I've only seen the English dub of Spirited Away, which by all accounts is quite good. |
| Freya_Crescent_II | Some dubs are REALLY bad. POkemon was dubbed, so all the lovley bits with Ai (Amber) were cut out in England, and the film lost it's meaning. And the second one was dubbed so it sounded like "I can do anything without help" as the film's "Motto". Squall-ish and Seifer-ish, yes. |
| alb2991 | MY TOP TEN ARE THESE: 1. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 1: IN MY OPINION THIS STARTED THE WHOLE MOVIE THING. 2. THE NEW ONE OUT NOW THE HILLS HAVE EYES: THAT MOVIE WAS GRUESOME AND WES CRAVEN NEVER DISSAPPOINTS. 3. SCREAM 1: THIS WAS A WELL THOUGHT OUT HORROR MOVIE. AND IT SPAWNED TO GOOD SEQUELS. 4. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (THE REAMKE): I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A TERRIFING MOVIE IN MY LIFE. 5. HOUSE OF WAX: PARIS HILTON DYING WAS THE BOMB. 6. FREDDY VS JASON: COME ON TWO ICONS BATTELING IT OUT WAS GOOD. 7. RENT: I LOVED IT. 8: CHICAGO: THIS MOVIES WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN AND THE ACTING WAS GOOD. 9. THE FOUR BROTHERS: THIS WAS A VERY GOOD ACTION MOVIE. 10: FINDING NEMO: MY FAV DISNEY MOVIE...LOL.. |
| screamingferret | I did enjoy House of Wax. I really want to see the original sometime, as I've heard it's pretty good. I chiefly remember Freddy vs. Jason for the general hilarity of the 'It's Freddy versus Jason! Place your bets!' deleted scene. In case you forgot what film you were watching, I guess. |
