Is this a punishment-worthy offense?
Hi everyone,

A user here named "pstibbons" just more-or-less flamed me for my HP/XME crossover "The Company We Keep". Basically, I was being preached to by some disrespectful, bitter, die-hard Harry/Hermione 'shipper who couldn't stand the fact that I was leaning towards Harry/Ginny in that story.

Here's what she had to say...
~
I'm not reading any more, since you're stupid enough to think Ginny is worth anything. You've got to understand that Hermione is worth several Ginnys. Hermione is always on Harry's side, Ginny is only interested in the BWL. Hermione's a woman,Ginny is merely a girl.
~

Just wondering if her offensive remarks and intelligence-questioning insults would be worthy of some sort of punishment by the Admins. Maybe just delete that "review" at the very least.

Although I'd like to think that I handled myself well with my calm response...

Hi,

I just got your review for my HP/XME crossover.

A word of advice: Don't go calling writers "stupid" just because they don't subscribe to the same pairings of fictional characters as you do, because not only is it impolite, it's also generally bad luck (especially when they can go to the site Admins. about it).

I am also not about to let myself to be preached to by a disrespectful, bitter, die-hard Harry/Hermione 'shipper. (Nothing against the 'ship itself, but those who lash out at others just because they subscribe to a different 'ship. I don't criticize others for their beliefs, but I can criticize them for what they say or do to others using those beliefs as justification.)

And if you don't like what I write, then don't read it. You're always welcome to read something else or even write your own stuff.

Also, it just so happens that I've abandoned that particular fic because of lack of direction and inspiration, but will pick it up and fix it in the future. So trust me, you're not missing all that much.

However, if you're looking for something worthwhile to read, then this just might catch your interest...

Rous You could do what I do when getting a particularly heinous flame: leave it there. I have contacted admins when the site allowed it and the poster was censured, but I left the comment, even though I had the ability to remove it. I think it just makes the flamer look even more stupid, especially when the story is good. I never delete flames; they just make me look better, IMO.
But, if you feel it was personal, then by all means, you should report them. If they did it once, they will do it again.
Quillian Rous,

Thanks again for the feedback.

I wouldn't call it a particularly heinous flame, either. And as far as some of the crap which I've had to put up with in fanfiction goes, this probably doesn't even scratch the surface.

But yes, I do want to deter them from doing it again.

Flames
Yeah, I asked admin what to do about a flame that said I was going to hell because

a) I was writing slash and
b) it was about a programme the reviewer didn't like

I'm not entirely sure what kind of person goes around flaming stories about pairings they don't like in programmes they don't like, but the admin response was: hmm, maybe something should be done or something.

I've just left them and told them to grow up. I'm a good author though and I don't appreciate people whinging because they don't approve of the content. It sucks, but I suppse it teaches me to deal with criticism. This is the flame, incidentally:

I wish somone would shit on your head for all of eternity until you start to realize how GAY it is. I hate you. If it were up to me, you would be in the firey depths of Hell!!!! F@!# YOU. GO F@@# YOURSELF!
See you in hell!

What can be said to that, really?
Sarkywoman Uh, I accidentally copied it twice. Excuse my stupidity.

Ithilwen Sometimes a flame is a badge of honor, but you should be able to get the review deleted if you want it gone.

It sounds like your flamer, Sarky, is the type who flames for entertainment. Give none. It's much easier to not respond on the net than it is to not respond in real life.
Quillian I'm not even aiming to get this review deleted, more because I'm planning on removing the story anyway.

Interesting outlook with flames as "badges of honor", Ithilwen. I admire your philosophy. :)
Sarkywoman Yeah, that's a pretty good way of looking at it, thanks.
