I guess letting the enemy capture you is pretty much a standard Jedi trick?
It took me a while to figure out what you were going to do with Ron, but now that it's out there, the foreshadowing is obvious.

Well, it seems to have worked for Obi-Wan and Luke, so why not Harry?
I hated to kill him off, and i rewrote the scene several times making him look better each time, but it was actually written many months ago.
As you said, there were several clues.
