Father and Son
0 ReviewsThis is a Robin of Sherwood fanfic but the category isn't there just yet. It's a take on what the earl of Huntingdon might do to secure an heir. It needs tweaking but let me know what you think.
......................................
Thoros did it. When Edessa needed a heir and no one but Baduin of Boulogne was available, adoption seemed the better choice. Look how that ended. And now the earl of Huntingdon will do it, himself, to provide an heir for his house.
"I will not live forever, Huntingdon needs an earl."
The soft evening light filters through the trees and Sherwood forest watches his young king.
"I know that. I don't wish for the estates to go to the crown, but surely Gisburne isn't the better choice."
"He has learned."
And isn't that fantastic? Fury on two legs, a charger, breaking limbs as he rides across the villages.
"He's cruel and petty, he's always been a bully."
"He's a man. Young. Hot tempered, but so was I in my youth. The war in France has helped forge his character."
Pray there is a right way of spilling blood..
"Robert. I'm aware it was you who bought his pardon, with funds from Huntingdon I might add. "
"He was supposed to go to France and never to come back."
The king of Sherwood, sullen, with a pout that will end in renunciation.
"You know I cannot stop you."
"I know, my son. I wished... but you made your own choices. Foolish as they were, it's done. Gisburne, no, Guy reminds me of myself. He's not my son but he will be a fine leader."
If only they both knew...
"Do you care at all that he tried to kill me?"
"Do you care for Huntingdon at all?"
"Yes. But you're right, I made my choices. I hope you're not making a mistake with this. "
"Goodbye, Robert."
There is a brief acknowledgement. And as the king of Sherwood forest watches, the earl rides away.

I got a bit creative with the adoption thing, but it was not unheard of at the time... If anyone knows how it was done (beyond the getting under a shirt thingy), do let me know.
