Naruto and Deidara meet to find an instant friendship that easily turns into more. The problem is Naruto can't take Sasuke off his mind.
“We Were Just Kids”
For Naruto, it was weird that he was trusted to carry on a solo mission but this was probably because the new Hokage had a lot of faith in him. After delivering the scrolls on a far away village, Naruto was very tired and wishing to meet his bed, but the journey back to Konoha was still long.
Feeling thirsty and needing a short rest, he stopped at a lake he ran across by casualty. It seemed safe for him to stay there since it was far way from the villages close by, so he decided to take a nap.
Deidara felt liberated for the first time in years. Sasori had been sent on a solo mission, meaning he had a lot of time to spare. Right now, he really wanted to practice his art and maybe come up with some new techniques. That’s why he needed a large space away from civilization.
He finally found a field with a lake. The place seemed perfect and at first sight it seemed empty, until Deidara spotted an orange bulge on the grass. Carefully, he walked towards it to find out the bulge was in fact a boy.
Naruto opened his eyes and saw a pair of blue ones looking at him. He immediately pushed the person away and stood up. “Who the hell are you?!”
“That’s none of your business, un,” Deidara answered, crossing his arms.
“It's my business when someone is so close to me!” Naruto screamed, placing his hand over his kunai pocket.
“Hey, I was just curious to see a boy laying in the grass in the middle of nowhere,” Deidara said as he walked towards the lake, sitting in the border. “And you can take your hand off there; the last thing I want right now is a fight, yeah.”
Naruto looked at him, he didn’t see any weapons or somewhere to place them, and so he decided to trust him. “Are you a ninja?”
“Yeah,” Deidara said, pointing at his head band with his thumb. “I used to work on Iwagakeru but I got bored and left for another organization.”
“Oh,” Naruto said. “I didn’t think it was that easy to leave your village.”
“It wasn’t, yeah,” Deidara answered.
Naruto decided it was safe to approach him and sat right next to him. “I don’t think I could ever abandon Konoha, I want to be Hokage!”
“Dream on kid,” he says, as he takes a look at Naruto’s face.
Naruto smiles. “I don’t care if people say it’s impossible…”
Deidara looked at his face, he look so determined. From that look in his eyes, you could tell that his dream was his life. “What’s your name?” Deidara asked, looking away.
“Uzumaki Naruto,” he answered cheerfully.
“Deidara,” he said, before Naruto could ask.
Naruto looked at him, at his blue eyes. “Hasn’t anyone ever told you, you look like a girl?”
Deidara looked at him with hate. “I can kill you, you know, yeah?”
He laughed. “I think you wouldn’t.”
His smile and laugh sort of soothed Deidara and easily made him forget the comment. “You are really strange.”
“You think so?” Naruto said, looking at him attentively with his big blue eyes.
“Don’t tell me nobody has ever told you that before, yeah?”
Naruto’s face stiffened. “I guess they have. Well… They don’t say it much actually, they simply show it.”
“What do you mean?” Deidara asked, seeing the change of tone on the younger blonde.
“People avoid in me in Konoha and I guess it’s because I’m weird.”
“I don’t know,” Naruto answered. “They just do.”
Deidara noticed how gruesome the boys face seemed. “If people treat you like that, then why don’t you leave?”
“I couldn’t,” Naruto answered. “Anyways, I still have people I care about. Like the Hokage, Sakura-chan, Kakashi-sensei, Iruka-sensei and all those other guys. Oh and there’s also,” Naruto pauses as he blushed. “Sasuke...”
He arched his eyebrow. “Sasuke?”
“Yeah, he’s my teammate and best friend,” Naruto answered cheerfully, his cheeks retaining the red.
“Yeah, we are kind of rivals too but I believe we have become real good friends lately.”
Deidara smiled as he inspected his face. “Do you like this boy?”
Naruto turned red. “What?! NO WAY!!”
His reaction caused Deidara to laugh. “You do, yeah!”
The younger blonde crossed his arms in protest. “So what if I do?”
“I’m not saying there’s something wrong with it,” Deidara answered. “It's just that your face looked so cute when you said his name.”
Naruto looked away, blushing.”Shut up.”
“So, does he know?” Deidara proceeded to ask.
“No,” Naruto answered quickly.
“Do you think it’s easy to tell someone you like him?”
“No, but it’s always worth a shot,” Deidara answered.
Naruto rolled his eyes. “You don’t understand.”
“Of course I don’t,” Deidara answered. “I’ve just met you.”
“Then you shouldn’t mettle.”
“I can just not mettle, un,” Deidara said placing his head on Naruto’s lap. “I feel a little jealous.”
“Why is that?” Naruto asked, confused.
“Because he’s all that’s on your mind,” Deidara confessed.
Naruto arched an eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I wish someone could think of me the way you think of him,” Deidara responded.
After their first meeting, both ninjas had noticed something had clicked between them, so they decided to meet once in a while in a secret spot. Since it was harder for Naruto to be away from the village, they had picked a spot near Konoha but not too close because it might be dangerous for Deidara since he was a foreign ninja.
They had met whenever they got a chance, but of course sometimes, Naruto would wait for Deidara to never show up and vice versa.
Today they had managed to coincide. Naruto was sitting in the middle of the field looking at the sky when his eyes were covered by a pair of hands. He smiled. “You can’t fool me Deidara,” he uttered.
“I can never fool you, yeah,” Deidara responded and then sat next it Naruto.
“I was about to go,” Naruto informed.
“Well then I guess I’m lucky, un.”
Naruto smiled as he scooted closer to Deidara. “I’ve missed talking to you this past week. I’ve really needed a friend to talk to.”
Deidara hated when Naruto called him a friend, he wanted so much more than that. “Why is that, did something happen?”
“Yeah, Sasuke had been a bit weird,” Naruto said. “I’m starting to get worried.”
Another thing Deidara hated, Sasuke Uchiha. He was in every sentence Naruto said. It was very annoying and Deidara couldn’t get past it. “Weird, how?”
“He’s been very cold and silent, and he hardly hangs out with me anymore.”
“I don’t understand why you pay so much attention to him when there are people around you who would give you a lot more than he will ever do,” Deidara said unconsciously.
“What people?” Naruto asked, confused.
“Nobody,” Deidara quickly answered, mentally slapping himself.
Naruto stayed silent for a while, looking at Deidara’s flushed face. Suddenly, he gasped and surprise was quickly written in his face. “Do you like me, Deidara?”
Deidara swallowed hard. “Yeah…”
Naruto looked away. Why hadn’t he noticed it before?
“Don’t think too much about it,” Deidara continued. “It's just something dumb and…”
But before Deidara could continue, Naruto kissed his lips.
“What are you doing?!” Deidara screamed, pushing him away.
“Kissing you, duh,” Naruto answered.
“I know what you are doing! I’m asking you why!!”
“Because I like you too,” Naruto answered.
After that day, Deidara has returned to their spot a million times, almost every day. But every time he could only remember their kisses and imagine what else could happen. Leave it all to the fantasies. Naruto never returned after that.
A month, maybe two passed by and he still hadn’t return. Deidara left little notes to him in the tree they had assigned for that purpose but every time he returned, they were still there, untouched.
Many things ran through Deidara’s mind. In the worst case scenario, Naruto was dead but he tried not to imagine that. The other reasons were a little more viable. Naruto might be on a long mission, he might be severely injured or maybe they had discovered that he was leaving Konoha without permission.
But no matter how many times he thought of those reasons, he couldn’t really believe them. In fact, he wasn’t sure of anything but one thing, it involved Sasuke Uchiha
Why he thought that? He didn’t know. It was just something inside of him that told him so.
Deidara sat in the middle of their spot, in the middle of such tall trees. He was feeling miserable. He needed to see Naruto. Going to Konoha wasn’t an option, but what else could he do. He had to see him.
He stood up and quickly ran in the direction towards Konoha, arriving there in a few minutes. The village seemed peaceful and so far, nobody had noticed his presence. Still, he created a few clay spiders triggered to explode in case someone noticed him.
The hospital was the first place he was going to visit since Naruto might be injured and well, he didn’t know where else to go. Deidara looked around a bit until he spotted it. He had to find out if Naruto was there, but he couldn’t just look into every window, especially if there were ninjas in this hospital.
Instead, he looked inside and noticed that there was no one on the entrance counter. There should be a list of the patients and their rooms in it.
Uzumaki Naruto. Room 17.
Deidara took a quick glance to the numbers on the doors and left the place.
Outside, he counted the number of windows until he found 17. That had to be it.
Slowly, he approached it and looked inside. His heart almost melted when he saw Naruto all bandaged and asleep. Deidara knew then that he hadn’t abandoned him.
He had to talk to him, now exactly what had happened to him. So, Deidara opened the window from the outside, luckily, it wasn’t closed.
“Naruto…” Deidara whispered in his ear.
For a second, Naruto thought he had gone insane. But then Deidara wrapped his arms around his thin body and he knew it was real.
“What happened to you?” Deidara asked, looking into Naruto’s blue eyes. Oh how he had missed those eyes.
Naruto didn’t say a word. He just looked at Deidara.
“You’re scaring me, yeah.”
“I…” Naruto paused and pressed his head against Deidara’s chest. “I told him I loved him and he left.”
Deidara’s eyes shot open. “You mean Sasuke?”
Naruto nodded, not living his chest.
“He was the one who left you in this condition, un,” Deidara stated, he didn’t need to ask.
“We fought and I lost, so he left,” the boy said. “He told me that he loved me, but that it didn’t matter because love wasn’t important.”
Deidara felt his shirt getting wet. Anger was slowly burning in his insides. Not only because that Uchiha had dared to injure his Naruto but because he was jealous. How could Naruto still spill tears for that guy? Why couldn’t he see how much Deidara loved him?
“I’m sorry,” Naruto whispered. “I know I gave you hopes but…”
“Don’t worry,” Deidara said, hugging him tight. “I’ll make you forget about him.”
Naruto stayed silent. He then separated from Deidara and once again looked into his eyes. “I’m leaving,” he uttered.
“I’m going to train in order to become stronger and bring Sasuke back,” Naruto explained. “I’m sorry.”
Deidara didn’t move. He couldn’t believe his ear. Why? Why was he doing this to him? “Naruto…”
“Nothing you say will change my mind.”
He couldn’t bare it. Without hesitating, he fled from that room, leaving Naruto for what he assumed was forever.
