Chapter Five: Puccho:

All the rains of June
it brings together, and it is swift --
the river Morgami.

The rain got heavier this afternoon. Tsuzuki made it to Kimoto Manor’s door. He rang the bell.

“Coming!” a female’s voice said. Tsuzuki waited for a moment. The door finally slid open. Rihoko looked him up and down and smiled.

“Oh Tsuzuki!!” she said. “Anna’s in her room on her laptop like usual.”

“Thanks,” the Shinigami said with a bow. The student let him inside. Tsuzuki made it down the hall and knocked on Anna’s door.

“Enter!” she called. Tsuzuki slid open the door and walked inside. Anna looked up slowly. They stared at each other a moment and looked away, blushing. (Easy to see why.)

“Hi…” Anna mumbled.

“Hi…” Tsuzuki said back. Silence. Hard to find the right words to say to the person you want but can’t have. Pretty awkward…

“I met Becky a while back,” Tsuzuki spoke up. Anna looked up quickly.

“Really now?” she asked.

Tsuzuki nodded. “Yeah.”

“What did she say?” Anna asked.

Tsuzuki shrugged. “Oh, just that she thought that you were murdered or sold into prostitution.”

Anna blinked at him. “Huh?”

Tsuzuki shrugged. “That’s what she said.” Silence.

Tsuzuki smiled. “She did say you were great.”

Anna raised an eyebrow at him. “Really now?”

“Yes,” the Shinigami answered.

Anna gave him a little smile at that. “That’s Becky. She always worried about me.”

“That’s a real friend,” he said.

“Yeah,” she agreed. Silence again.

Tsuzuki smiled. “Anna.”

The woman looked up at him. “Yes?”

Tsuzuki paused for a moment before speaking again. He swallowed hard for a bit. “I want to get to know you a little bit better.”

She looked at him in suspicion. “In what way?”

He hesitated to speak at first. “You know, just in any way possible if that’s okay with you.” Silence. The Shinigami waited for a reply. Anna only nodded at last.

“Fine,” she said. “I’ll let you get to know me.” Tsuzuki looked overjoyed.

“Thanks Anna,” he replied. She held up her hand to him.

“But,” she said. “I will let you in slowly. I never really had anyone so close to me like that before. So, don’t be surprised when I push you away when I feel that you’re getting too close, okay?” Tsuzuki nodded.

“Sure,” he replied. “Anything you like.” Anna smiled again.

“Thanks,” she replied. The Shinigami only nodded. Both sat in silence as they listened to the rain pouring outside. There might something here after all.
