Mikey stormed in and went straight to his bunk, ripping the curtain over. I just looked at Toro who shrugged, before setting the Xbox controller down and going to sort the younger Way brother out.
“Mikes? Are you okay in there dude?”
“Hello? Is anybody in there?”
There was still no answer.
“Right, I’m coming in.”
I pulled back the curtains and Mikey was curled up in a teensy ball, his gangly frame quivering. I took me a moment to realise he was crying. Oh great... what the fuck do I do now?
“Hey, dude, what’s up?” I placed a hand on his shoulder and he jerked it away. Not a good sign
“Go ‘way” he moaned
“Not happening bro, so just tell me yeah?”
Mikey sat up and glared at me. Holy shit. He looked awful
His hair was all fluffed up; his eyeliner was running down his face; his face was bright red. Something big was up.
“He kissed her.” He mumbled.
I took her to mean Lilly.
“Who do you mean by ‘he’, mikes? “
“Gerard.” He whispered, and then dramatically burst into tears. Sheesh.
I clumsily patted his shoulder, murmuring “calm down.” and “shush now.”
“Mikes, why are you so upset about Gee kissing Lilly?”
“Is it really that hard to see I like her?”
“Oh... and did Gee know? It might have been a mist-“
“It wasn’t a mistake. I told him.” He said, cutting across me.
“Fucker.” I said. I knew what it was like to be in Mikey’s position. How many times had it happened to me in high school?
I knew that voice.
“Hey! Iero!” Jared called again.
“What do you want this time Jared?” I sighed. I knew whatever it was it couldn’t be good. Jared was one of the ‘Populars’ he always had something against me, fuck knows why...
“You know that Megan chick?”
Yes. I did actually, we got on quite well. Very well, we were going out in fact.
“What about her?”I snapped.
I knew whatever it was it couldn’t be good if it was coming from Jared.
“She sure knows how to work her mouth” he said, winking at me.
“Motherfucker!” I yelled and went charging at him.
“Helloooo... Franklin Anthony Iero, answer me” Mikey’s voice hit me like a ton of bricks and I snapped out of my flashback.
“Yes mom?” I chuckled weakly.
“What happened? Are you okay” Mikey asked, his voice full of concern.
“Yeah, I’m fine, just a flashback.”
There was an awkward silence then for a moment, broken by me.
“So, do you want me to speak to Gee?
“NO!” Mikey said, a little too loudly, causing me to glare at him.
“Alright, chill out man!” I said, raising my eyebrows. It wasn’t like Mikey to get touchy.
“Sorry.” He whispered. “Can I have some time alone please Frank? I need to think.”
I nodded and went over to the sofa to talk to Ray about what I’d just heard.
I pressed the end of my cigarette against the side of the bus and stood up. I didn’t want to go in there and face Mikey, but I knew I’d have to sooner or later.
“C’mon you can do it Gee...” I said to myself as I stood up.
Was I really talking to myself now? Jeeze...
I pulled the door on the bus and walked in, cautious at all times. Knowing Mikey, I’d probably get a major session of verbal abuse.
I sat on the sofa next to Ray, who as soon as my butt touched the sofa, got up and walked away.
What the fuck?
I turned on the telly and waited for Mikey to come to me.
After watching SpongeBob for half an hour, I decided I couldn’t wait any longer.
I got up and went to the bunks. Frank was in his. Ray was in his. Johnny was definitely in his, judging by the snoring. Mikey’s bunk however was totally empty. All that was in there was his unicorn plushie.
“Fuck, fuck, and fuck” I murmured under my breath.
“Try the bathroom Gee” I heard from Frankie’s bunk. There was something of in his tone.
It bothered me. Last time Frankie and I had argued, I was an alcoholic, and I didn’t care. Those were the darkest days of my life.
I walked to the bathroom on the top deck, and knocked on the door.
“Go away Gerard.”
My jaw dropped.
How did he know it was me?
“I SAID GO AWAY!” I screamed at the bathroom door.
Gerard hadn’t stopped knocking and shouting things from the other side of the door, and I guessed he’d been there for about an hour now. He was too late now though. The blood congealed on my stomach, legs and on one occasion, my wrist. My tears dripped from my head, landing in the cuts sometimes. I cringed as the saltiness made them sting. I was in agony, but this was better than doing nothing, and letting the hurt consume me whole.
The hurt being that I couldn’t even trust my own brother anymore.
BANG, BANG, BANG
Fists rained down on the door and then Ray’s booming voice pierced the silence
“Mikey Way, open this door, or I’ll smash it into fucking splinters.”
He sounded mad. Like, real mad.
I still wasn’t giving in.
“FUCK OFF! ALL OF YOU!” I screamed so loud, my vocal chords practically ripped. Black spots were obscuring my vision now. And I felt dizzy... really diiizzzyyy
Next thing I knew, the door had been smashed, literally into splinters and everybody saw what I had done.
I heard Gerard screaming at Frank to “Call an Ambulance! Quick!”
Then, the dark, cold abyss consumed me whole.
