Moonlight flooded the room, its white glow touching everything it could. Gentle breathing could barely be heard over the roaring waves outside from tide. You sighed and stuck your fingers in the hair just above your forehead, blowing air out of your pursed lips. It was near impossible to sleep, and although you had tried, your restless mind was keeping you awake.
Throwing your hand back on the bead, you closed your eyes and made one last attempt to relax. Of course, this only lasted about ten seconds before you sat up in annoyance and flipped the blankets off of your body. Your legs were tossed over the side, and you stood up, pulling at your nightgown to make it stop sticking to crevices.
Grabbing a towel, you opened the door and quietly stepped out into the hallway. You slipped through the corridor with creepy goodness and exited the hotel. Cool sand felt soothing beneath your feet as you made your way toward the water.
Dropping the towel, you pulled off your nightgown and waded into the water. No, it wasn't a skinny-dipping adventure; you still had your undergarments. Diving in, you shivered at the chilled liquid caressing your body. You soon became a bobbing head in the rolling waves.
Running your hands across your hair, you closed your eyes and tilted your face heavenward. It was much more peaceful out here, as long as you disregarded what was swimming beneath you, that is. You were treading water slowly, wide awake but feeling half dreaming at the same time.
"It is not wise to swim alone, you know," a voice announced nearby, making you start and spin around. A pair of golden eyes gazed at you in amusement, and you relaxed, giving a nervous laugh.
"Saïx, what are you doing out here at this time of night?"
"I could ask you the same thing," he returned coolly.
"Ahh...well, a nice swim certainly helps that along."
"And you saw me and decided you'd take a shot and making me drown by cardiac arrest?" You giggled and did a side stroke to put yourself more in range of hearing him.
"No, I'm sort of a nocturnal person. I figured you could use some company."
"Lunar...right. That makes sense, I guess."
"If it didn't, I would say you have no place in this organization with such ignorance."
"Oh, well thank you," you said cheerfully. There was no response; merely, he turned his gaze to the moon. "Are you looking forward to going back home tomorrow?"
"There is much to do. I hate to be away from duty for too long; it leaves me restless."
"Oh, me too," you drawled sarcastically, rolling your eyes and grinning. He gave you a cold stare, and you shook your head. "Don't you ever allow yourself to just have fun? Or is that against your mighty principles?"
Saïx frowned, playing with a small piece of driftwood floating past him. His blue hair was spread around his bare shoulders, shifting as the waves turned under them. You swam closer to get his attention, which you knew you had, even if he wasn't looking at you.
"I know it must be difficult...knowing you've lost your best friend and everything." He looked up in surprise. "Hey! I have just as much access to member files as everybody else. Besides, when I could actually get Xemnas to talk, he often talked about everybody else, so I learned a few things." You winked at him, but he just glowered to the side.
"It isn't as though I feel anything. I just want to finish this, and the lack of cooperation from the other members gets us nowhere." You sighed and twitched your lips.
"I'm sorry. That's partly my fault. I really don't take as many missions as I could, but Xemnas keeps assigning me tasks with someone I don't get along with, so it always goes poorly and it makes me look bad. Hearts are important; it's so empty when you don't feel anything. But...I guess...emptiness is sort of a feeling too, isn't it?"
"We just lack emotions, not feeling entirely. Surely you know this yourself by now?"
"Me? Oh yeah...me and all my emptiness. Yeah. Sucks." His eyebrows dropped in confusion of your response. "Saïx, surely you know by now. I'm not exactly a Nobody anymore." The man blinked a few times and turned to the side.
"Well that explains a lot. Wait, what do you mean...'anymore?'"
"I'm not really sure. I died in darkness. My body became a Heartless, and a Nobody was created. I passed onto this life. But my heart came back to me. I did not seek it...Heartless claimed me one night in Zexion's room, and I fought my original self. In return, I got my heart back."
"Impossible..." he mumbled.
"Of course, I don't exactly want this getting out anywhere; last time, I had my emotions toyed with. A lot. So if you could keep this a secret, I'd really appreciate it. I know you hate holding things back from Xemnas, but if you could just this once..."
"Consider it done." Blinking a few times in astonishment, you murmured to yourself, "Well that was easy." Both of you were quiet for a while, just drifting along with the current and enjoying the coolness of the water.
"You have a sensitive side," you said softly after staring at him for a few seconds. He glanced up in surprise and cocked his head. "I didn't expect that. You cared for me when I hurt myself in the kitchen, you're still hurt over losing Axel- even without a heart, it's imprinted on you, and you're actually willing to keep the information I just shared confidential." He stared at you coldly, and you smiled slightly. "Don't worry; I won't tell anyone. Your secret is safe with me...not like anyone would believe me anyway." At this, you laughed, looking up at the stars and watching as one shot across the sky.
When you glanced back down, you had to do a double take. Saïx was directly in front of you, staring at you with an intensity you were not familiar with in this man. Glancing to the side a few times, you frowned and tilted your chin to the side in bafflement.
"My original self hated you, yes...you are right."
"I knew it!"
"But he had fewer members to work with, and most of them were uncooperative. Since he was just like me, I can only imagine his irritation. But if he were in my circumstances, I'm sure he would have thought differently."
"No, I don't know. I'm a different person now. I was more obnoxious then. Or maybe I wasn't...I don't know. Did I change? Wait, why the hell would you know?" His eyebrows pinched together again, as they did so often.
"What I'm trying to say is, you're not as bad as he may have assumed."
"Thanks?" He chuckled.
"I meant it as a compliment."
"Saïx, you're so different than what I assumed you to be! I always thought you were this cruel sadist...I mean, a real sadist. You would get off on other people's pain. Now I'm thinking differently...very differently. It's weird, and it goes against everything I've ever believed about you."
"And if you tell anyone about it, it will be the end of you, I promise."
"There you are! Heh, I was beginning to miss you!" You winked and touched the tip of his nose with your index finger. The Luna Diviner shrunk away and wrinkled his nose in distaste, making you giggle.
"You are an oddball, that's for sure," he grumbled. "The only time I ever see you happy is exactly as you described me; when you cause others pain. Although, it's in a different way. You seem to get off on annoying people."
"A frenzied vixen. Or since Demyx seems to think you came from heaven," he paused and gave a befuddled expression, "A chaotic angel. Why Xemnas never kept you at his side is beyond me."
"Can you really see someone like me with a guy like Xemnas? I'm impatient, and he talks /so damn slow/! I like to have adventures, and he sits in his study and fills out paperwork. The only reason I care about power is so I can wave it in front of people's faces and brag. I never actually enforce it. Xemnas is a power-hungry animal...sort of. He's a good leader, in any case. If anyone were to stand at his side, they'd have to be a good support system, and I'm terrible at that," you said miserably.
"That is true. You are really bad at that." You shot him a dirty look. "But what if you were to stand at someone's side that does not need support?"
"Who are you talking about? Because as far as I know, all of the nutcases here need some sort of support system. Marluxia is the only one I can think of that wouldn't really need-" A pair of soft lips silenced you as Saïx graced you with a tender kiss. Wait...what the hell?
It was over quickly- no surprise, for he was not a real passionate type of person. It was kind of a relief considering another person had already kissed you earlier that day. Nevertheless, you were still frozen, staring at him like a deer caught in headlights.
"What was that for?" you breathed, reaching up and gingerly touching your lips.
"I'd forgotten that you weren't smart enough to catch on, so I had to give you a hint."
"Yeah. You're just as cruel as ever. Thank you so much."
"Well, you were getting along the lines of Marluxia. That calls for desperate measures."
"True..." you agreed. "But where did this come from? I mean, you barely know who I am, you don't exactly have emotions, and...well, yeah, you really don't have emotions. You're the most heartless person I know!" He shrugged nonchalantly.
"I can still take a shine to a person. I can still be attracted to you, can I not?"
"You...attracted to /me/?"
"Do not act as though it comes as a huge shock. Your personality is exactly what I would need at my side. But that is up to you, of course."
"Uh...huh...well, Saïx, I have to say, I'm a little confused right now. But this may have something to do with the fact that I am about ready to pass out. So, I will think about it...when I'm awake." He chortled and nodded. "I hope you enjoy the rest of your night. I'm going to bed."
"Sleep well," he murmured, turning back to the moon. With a nod, you headed back to shore, hugging yourself and glancing over your shoulder before you grabbed the towel and wrapped it around your body and picked up your nightdress. What an odd day...
