Note: I do not own Spongebob or any of its characters. Also, depression and suicide are serious things. If you or anyone you know are depressed you should get help or help that person get help. Furthermore, if anyone you know does commit suicide, it is not your fault (unless you forced them to, then it kind of is); they might not be able to think clearly but that doesn't make it your responsibility. However, it is normal for people to feel guilt, so that's why Squilliam thinks it is his fault.
The only sound in the room was the steady beep of the heart monitor and the only other occupant was lying motionless on the bed in front of Squilliam.
He thinks about what could have led to this, why Squidward would do such a thing, but comes up with nothing and for that he feels guilty. He hasn't been there for his rival, popping sporadically in and out of his life. He should have seen this but he didn't because he was too caught up with being rich and famous.
But he should have kept an eye on Squidward. He had been there, was the only one Squidward still had contact with who had been there, when it had happened before. He remembers how Squidward went from standing up for himself, to glaring resentfully at Squilliam's taunts, and finally just sitting there and accepting them, until one day when Squilliam made a particularly cutting remark about Squidward's clarinet playing, Squidward burst into tears and dashed from the school. How the following Monday the school had been abuzz with news of Squidward's suicide attempt.
Squilliam had visited his rival in the hospital, only to be met with a blank, deadened look. He had vowed then not to lose focus on Squidward. Not that he had stopped insulting and bullying his rival, but he had toned it down, and he monitored the other's emotions; stopping if he thought that things were getting out of hand.
But after highschool they had lost touch and things had gotten in the way. He had still tried to reconnect with Squidward from time to time but the other squid had seemed to be doing fairly well and so other things took priority. He knew now that he should never have allowed that to happen.
As he mused, Squidward started to stir and his eyes fluttered open. They took in the surroundings and widened when they saw Squilliam. "Squi-Squi-"
"Shhh…" Squilliam hushed him, his voice oddly gentle. "Everything's going to be okay now. I'm going to be there for you."
