Spoilers for Conflicted, The Big Game, and Revelations
It was Morgan who guessed. He was the only one Reid had told, and when the team couldn't reach him after Texas Morgan knew where to look. It was drizzling when he pulled up to the gates of the cemetery and there was only one lonely, familiar, hunched over figure kneeling by a grave in the center of the plot.
He didn't look up when Morgan slammed the car door, and didn't seem to notice when Morgan, not so gracefully tramped through the leaves towards him. Not wanting to startle him but not knowing how to get his attention greatly Morgan coughed, "Y'know you'll get a cold if you stay out here much longer, Pretty Boy."
Reid spun around, his face wearing an expression of surprise that would have been funny if not for the watermarks that were obviously not from the rain going down his cheeks.
"M-Morgan! What are you doing here?"
"I'd ask you the same question, but I don't have to be a genius to know that this case hit you hard." He gestured towards the tombstone that read simply, "Tobias Hankel" and the dates of his birth and death. Reid had added "a good friend" to it, but it seemed that apart from his father and his NA buddies, Hankel kept to himself. No one else stepped forward to say anything.
"I-I feel like I failed him. I should have recognized the sign's, maybe if I had Adam would have gotten help sooner and less people would have gotten-"
"Woah, woah, woah don't go blaming yourself, Pretty Boy. This isn't your fault, got that?"
"But I should have seen it, I should have been the first to know that-"
"None of us could have realized this and if it hadn't been for you no one would have."
"That's not true, you would have gotten it eventually." Reid said, ducking his head, embarrassed.
"Okay" Morgan said, chuckling, "But it would've taken a hell of a lot longer and a whole lot of more bodies before we did. You noticed it by a simple change in expression. None of us would have figured it out that fast."
" I just feel, like I let him down. Tobias helped me in every way I could and I repaid him by shooting him. The least I could have done was to help someone like him."
"You listen to me now, Reid" Morgan said taking him by his shoulders, "No listen!" he said as Reid tried to turn away, "You did what you had to do. Whether it was him or one of his personalities he was about to kill you and you had no choice but to defend yourself and as soon as you even suspected that Adam was going through the same thing, you did everything you could to help him. Sometimes our best just isn't enough, but that doesn't make it our fault, you got that?"
Reid nodded, sniffling, "So why are you here anyway?"
"We've got another case."Morgan replied, sighing, "If you want to sit this one out I'm sure Hotch-"
"No, I'll be fine. I just need to change," Reid said laughing a bit and gesturing towards his muddy clothes.
"No problem. We can swing by your house on the way to the airport and you can grab your go bag and a change clothes."
"Okay," Reid said. They started to head towards Morgan's car. "Morgan?" Reid asked.
"Yeah, kid?"
"Thanks."
