Beep! Beep! Beep! Bee-!
The last beep was cut off as Aaron reached the oven and shut off the timer. "Brownies are done!" He called and smiled when he heard the sound of feet pounding the floor as his son raced to the kitchen.
"Can I have some?" Jack asked his father, who was cutting the brownies into squares, the boy's eyes lighting up at the sight of the tray seemingly full of solid chocolate.
"Almost." Aaron laughed. "We need to wait for them to cool down a bit." Jack's face fell. "Why don't you sit at the table and I'll pour us some milk while we wait."
Jack plopped down in his chair and sighed, while Aaron poured the milk and then set the glasses on the table. Sitting down across from his son, Aaron glanced longingly at the tray. Truth be told, he was anxious to try the brownies too, but not enough to risk his son getting burnt.
"Are they done yet?" Jack pouted plaintively.
"A couple more minutes, Buddy." Aaron smiled. "So what did you and Aunt Jess do while I was at work?" Along with watching Jack when Aaron went away, Jessica had also offered to do so on Saturdays since Jack didn't have school and would need a babysitter.
Jack shrugged. "Stuff." His eyes traveled to the brownies and then back to Aaron. "Hey, Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"What's a virgin?"
Aaron sputtered, taking a drink of milk to stall. "Wh-what did you say, Buddy?"
"What's a virgin?" Jack asked, looking at him innocently.
"Uh, well, Jack, I… uh, a virgin is a person who hasn't um…had….sex yet."
"Oh." Jack looked even more puzzled then before. "What's sex?"
Aaron hesitated. "I think the brownies are done!" He got up and went over to the stove. He took his time putting the brownies onto plates and then carried them back over to table. "These look good! Let's eat!" He smiled nervously and focused on eating his brownie.
Jack started munching as well and Aaron had thought he had forgotten his question when, "Well, Daddy?"
"What, Jack?" Aaron asked, taking a gulp of milk.
"What's sex?" Jack asked again, this time impatiently.
"Well, uh… you see… uh, sex is what a man and a woman do to make a baby."
"But what do they do?" Jack persisted.
"Um…they…"Aaron sighed. "I know this is difficult to understand but I'll tell you when you get older."
"But, Daddy!" Jack whined.
"Ask me when you're ten." Aaron replied firmly.
"OK." Jack grumbled and Aaron felt relieved at getting off so easily.
"Hey, Jack?" He asked.
"What?'
"Where did you hear that word? Virgin?" He was truly curious. If someone talking about this around his son he wanted to know.
"I was practicing readings so I founds Mommy's old cooking book and one of the respeas needed olive oil with extra virgins." Jack explained.
