He's handed a small, grey rough-cardboard bowl, into which he duly retches a few mouthfuls of eggwhite-coloured bile.
Some moments pass, possibly many. He can't open his eyes properly, still paralysed by sleep. It's like birds' wings in cupped hands, angular and sinewy-strong and convulsive, thrumming at his temples, this light. Too pretty a poem for fluorescent tubing. He's blunted off, can hardly see, can't smell a thing. His throat raw with acid.
'Better?'
'What the fuck.' Maybe enough. He bares his teeth and closes his eyes properly and leans forward far enough to overbalance himself, knowing he'll be held.
