Chapter 1
“Are you sure you’re ok Slasher?” Axl worried, the pair having have made up, they were sat on Slash’s bed, cuddling, letting their true feelings for each other show. Slash smiled slightly and nodded but it he seemed on edge, worried. Suddenly he exploded
“Fuck sake! When are they gonna bring Steve in here?” as if on cue the door opened and a nurse walked in, she gave them all a tentative smile before gathering a few spare sheets from the cupboard in the corner of the room.
“Would you all like to see Mr Adler?” she asked, her voice was soft and had a slight welsh lilt to it. They nodded and leapt up immediately
“Where is he?” Slash asked, fear clear on his face for his oldest friend
“What happened?” Axl asked, as they hurried down the corridor
“When we got attacked by this thing, Steve got the worst of it all” Slash murmured, his expression worried
“In here” the young nurse said, opening a door.
As they all entered and looked around, the figure in the bed drawing their attention, shocked and horrified gasps escaped from Izzy and Axl’s mouths “Holy shit! Steve!” The drummer was lying in crisp white sheets, hooked up to a couple of drips, a plaster cast on his ankle, his waist had been bulked out by strapping on his ribs, there was a padded bandage on his shoulder hiding the bite and a bandage on his head.
The singer and rhythm guitarist went to the bedside immediately, Slash looked away, noticing Duff’s expression and reaction for the first time “Duff?” the bassist jumped but looked towards him quickly “Can I talk to you outside?” the blonde didn’t say anything but followed the guitarist out into the corridor “What’s wrong man?” there was a small silence
“I’m sorry I didn’t help you guys”
“Is that all that’s wrong with you?” the bassist nodded, ashamed of himself “Duff, look there was nothing you could of done, this was a fucking freak attack, we couldn’t see the fucker, there was nothing you coulda done, I swear that to you, you’ve got the girls to look after, I haven’t, I mean I’ve got the boys but if I was still with Perla then I wouldn’t have done anything, it was a spur of the moment thing”
“Yeh but Slash I should’ve at least tried! At least you did something, I didn’t do anything! I didn’t even fucking try!”
“Duff, look at me” tortured blue eyes met Slash’s brown ones “There was nothing you could have done, sides we need you now more than we ever did in that chapel”
“Whadda you mean?” there was a comforted curiosity to Duff’s voice now rather than it purely self-hatred.
Slash smiled “I mean I need you to look after my boys, Izzy needs you to be there with him and you’ll have to look after Treader” Duff made an amused breathy noise
“Great” Slash laughed
“I know right? Axl’s in need of people to tell his band what’s happened”
“And Steve?” there was a scepticism in Duff’s features now.
“Steve’ll need 24/7 watches, and you’re gonna take a shift, sides’ you’re gonna have to check his bedroom for scary monsters when we get out” Duff laughed, allowing Slash’s words to fully comfort him.
“Thanks man”
“No problem, now come on, lets go see Adler”
