Chapter Three.

I expected him to write something like, ‘Same here’ or ‘I see dead people’ or something to that effect, but I was definitely not prepared for what he wrote down in thick block letters.

“It said, ‘We’re watching.’” Ray said quickly, his eyes bulging out of his head. “That’s what the sign said. It even had their symbol on it!” He waved his hands frantically in the air and shook his head, his curly fro-like hair bouncing up and down.

I rolled my eyes. Was this guy for real? There was no such thing as aliens. I folded my arms, this was another reason why I hated these Group Sessions.

Maggie nodded enthusiastically, even though I knew she was probably thinking the same thing that I was or at least something along the lines of it. “Well, that’s quite interesting Ray.” She said, writing a note down on her clipboard. “I hope the aliens don’t get to you.” She said after a moment of writing. “We’d all miss you terribly.” I wouldn’t. Ray nodded his head and sat back in his chair, his eyes still wide, staring into space as he probably imagined an alien space craft crashing through the building.

Maggie was the one who always led these group sessions. She had a tattoo sleeve and spikey purple hair, so my respect for her went up a little bit. She wore fishnet stockings, short skirts, band tees, and combat boots. In my opinion she was fucking awesome.

She turned to Blondie and he told a story about how he had gotten a phone call from someone he referred to as ‘Hunsaker’ from the CIA asking him to go on a secret mission . He said that his being in the asylum was just a way to hide his real identity, so the enemy couldn’t find him. He made us all take an ‘oath of silence’ that we wouldn’t tell anyone about the ‘secrets’ he had just ‘entrusted’ us with. I scoffed and Maggie looked at me with a wary expression.

She flipped another page on her clipboard and began writing something down on again. “Trust me, Bob. We won’t say a word.” She zipped her lips. Oh so his name was ‘Bob’… I’ll have to try and remember that.

Maggie finished writing, flipped the page and then turned to me. “Frank?” I shook my head and kept my arms folded. She sighed and wrote another thing down. Then she turned to him – New Guy. “I don’t think I’ve met you.” She said smiling. “I’m Maggie, what’s your name?” She spoke to him as she would a small child, slowly and much too sweetly.

He looked up at her as if just noticing she was there, then his eyes widened when he found everyone staring at him. He opened his mouth as if to say something then looked back down at his hands. Maggie frowned and flipped through the pages on her clipboard. She stopped at one and read it over, and a look of realization and pity took over her face.

She turned around in the swiveling chair and opened a drawer up behind her. She pulled out a small pad of paper and then she shut it. She handed him the pad and her pen. “Here.” She said smiling.

He cautiously took the pad and rested it neatly on his upper leg before grabbing the pen. He poised it, ready to write and not looking up, his black hair fell around his face, so I couldn’t read his expression.

“So what’s your name?” She repeated slowly.

He slowly began to write, I noticed his penmanship was small, neat and in all capital letters. He held up the pad and she read it. “Gerard.” She read and smiled. “Is there anything you’d like to share, Gerard?” She asked softly.

He blinked and quickly wrote something down, and held it up. This time, I could see what it said.

NO.

Aw, damn it. I stayed awake for nothing.

Maggie blinked in surprise then licked her lips. “Alright. Well, that’s it for today.” I looked at the clock, had it really already been an hour. I yawned. “Hope to see you guys again in a few days.” She wrote something down on her clipboard, then stood up.

There was mumbling while everyone else left the room until it was me, Maggie and Gerard. Gerard lingered by the door unsure of what to do or where to go.

I walked over to Maggie and whispered in her ear. “Can I see his paper?”

She stared at me with an eyebrow raised. “Whose paper?” She frowned in confusion.

I lowered my voice again. “Gerard’s.” I hissed, glancing at him, making sure he couldn’t hear our conversation. He still stood near the doorway with an absent look on his face.

Maggie shook her head and sighed. “You know I can’t let you see it, Frank.” She shrugged her shoulders. “Rules are rules.” She said, glancing at me and then at Gerard. “He’s a special kid, Frank.” She said, lowering her voice as well.

I sighed in frustration. Why was everyone saying that? If something was so ‘special’ about my roommate, I should have the right to know, right? “Please. He’s my roommate.” I added, hoping that would help. “I just wanna see it.” I said again.

She shook her head. “If you want to know more about him, get to know him yourself.” She picked up her tan messenger bag and threw her clipboard inside. She put her hand on my shoulder in a way of saying goodbye. “See you later, Frank.” She said before heading towards the door. She put her hand on Gerard’s shoulder as well, then handed him the pen and pad. He stared at the floor and Maggie smiled at him softly before leaving.

I sighed. Would nobody give me answers? I walked over to Gerard and he looked at me with those wide eyes, I noticed they were green. He shoved his hands in his pockets and I stared at him for another minute, then walked out the door, heading back to my room – erm, our room. I heard Gerard’s footsteps behind me and let him walk into the room first.

He sat on his bed and I sat on mine. It was silent for a minute before I spoke up. “So, you know how things work around here?” I asked him.

Gerard nodded his head. I had to admit I was surprised. “You’ve been here before?” I had been here for a couple years and I know I hadn’t ever seen him. He shook his head. I frowned, I didn’t get it. “So… you’ve been in an…” I hated the word ‘asylum’ and I couldn’t bring myself to say it. “You’ve been in a place like this before?”

He nodded his head slowly.

“Oh.”

I didn’t know what to say afterwards, and then I decided I’d just blurt out what I was thinking. I laid on my bed with my arms underneath my head and my legs crossed. “So, what are you in for?”

Gerard paused then wrote something down on his notepad. I turned my head and he held the pad up.

YOU FIRST.

I chuckled. “I’m here against my will.” I said bitterly. “I’m not crazy.” I shrugged my shoulders as if that explains everything. “Your turn.”

I expected him to write something like, ‘Same here’ or ‘I see dead people’ or something to that effect, but I was definitely not prepared for what he wrote down in thick block letters.
