Even though he wouldn’t stop asking – I didn’t tell Gerard anything that I had heard the night before. I calmly told him that I had just been walking around and I had almost gotten caught. It was believable enough because he nodded his head and went back to sleep. I, however, did not. I was still running through what Hart had said while talking to Officer Lewis;

”He never leaves any survivors. But he left them both alive.”

I was trying to figure out what she had meant by ”both.”

”They need to be protected.”

Damn it. I was so fucking confused I couldn’t stand it. But then I realized that before I could figure things out, I’d have to talk to Gerard. I needed to know everything.

I went throughout the day, wondering how I would bring up the topic. I knew Gerard still didn’t want to tell me all about his past, but I just had to know. Yes, because I wanted to know, but also because after hearing the conversation the night before I needed answers, and I needed them soon. Finally I decided that after dinner I would finally bring it up – we were pretty much confined to our rooms for the rest of the evening/night so Gerard would just have to tell me.

It felt like dinner was taking forever. It seemed like the more Ray talked, the slower time went. Everyone seemed so calm, while I was drumming my fingers on the edge of the table, waiting for the familiar sound of Mike telling us to head back to our rooms. When he did I practically sprung from the table, got rid of my tray and pretty much dragged Gerard towards our room.

He sat on his bed, with his legs crossed, pulling at a string on the leg of his pants. I sat down next to him and he looked up and smiled. “Gerard.” He could tell that I was serious about something, so his smile faltered a little bit. “I need to know. Now.” I said sternly.

He opened his mouth, and I knew he was going to try and play innocent and say something like; “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” But he knew I wasn’t going to take any shit. He sighed and looked back down, fingers still pulling on the loose string. “What all do you want to know?” He asked quietly.

I shrugged my shoulders. “Everything. Just tell me what happened.” If I found out Gerard’s side of the story then maybe the conversation I had heard the night before would finally make sense. “Please.” I added, after noticing how uneasy he looked.

He took a deep breath and looked like he was in pain. “I don’t really remember much of it, Frank.” He started slowly, not looking up. “Maybe…” He paused thoughtfully, before resuming the pulling of the string. “I had gotten into a fight with my parents the day of.” Well, here it was. “I was in the kitchen with mom, helping her with dinner. I was chopping stuff up. Mikey and Dad were in the other room, watching TV.” He shifted uncomfortably. “Then the power went out.” His voice suddenly became small.

“Dad and Mikey came running into the kitchen. I guess I was still mad, because Dad tried to put his arm around me and I just… I still had the knife that I had been… chopping things up with. I must’ve taken it and… Just… He yelled and… He fell…” His voice caught. “Mom screamed. Told Mikey to run upstairs… so he ran upstairs but I just… stayed and then… Mom screamed again and… she… I must’ve…” Tears were falling and his shoulders were shaking. Maybe this hadn’t been such a great idea. “I went upstairs and Mikey was hiding in the closet. I went in there with him and… Everything just… it happened really fast… Mikey wouldn’t let go of me and he was crying… Then there was pain and just… blood…. Mikey said he was cold… I wrapped him in his blanket and just… All that blood… It was everywhere, Frank… I can’t… I can’t remember.” Now he was sobbing, his knees brought up to his chest, with his face buried in them. “Oh, God.” He sobbed. “I didn’t mean to.”

I leaned over and wrapped my arms around him. “I’m sorry.” As awful as I felt for Gerard, things weren’t adding up. When he was telling me what happened, he kept saying shit like ‘must have’ and ‘maybe’. I felt like a sleuth trying to figure out what was happening. It just didn’t make sense. He continued to cry, his sobs sounding pained and choked. “Hey, it’s okay…” I whispered, even though we both knew it wasn’t. Out of instinct, I kissed his cheek and cupped his face as I pulled away from him. “It’s gonna be okay…” I said again softly. He stared at me, his green eyes red and glistening with tears. I went towards him to kiss his cheek again, but ended up planting my lips against his.

His lips were salty, because of his tears, but I didn’t care. I let mine linger on his for a few more seconds before pulling away. He looked shocked at first, but then a small smile played at his lips. “Thanks, Frankie.” He whispered, and I hugged him again, kissing his now clammy forehead.

“You’re welcome, Gee.” I replied, pulling away. “Look, I’ll be back in a few.” He stared at me, aghast. “I know, I know, it’s past curfew. I just… I need to take care of something.” I kissed his cheek again. I seemed to be doing that a lot now. I didn’t care. “Look, I’ll be back in a bit.” He nodded his head as I got up and quickly went to the door looking both ways before running out, letting the door close behind me.

Millions of thoughts were running through my head. Some of them being;

1. I had kissed Gerard.
2. I had kissed Gerard and fucking loved it.
3. He seemed to like it too.
4. What did that make us? Boyfriends? Or was it just a spur of the moment thing? My way of comforting him or something?
5. I don’t think Gerard killed his family.
6. What makes me think that? I have no idea.
7. I had kissed Gerard.

For some of those thoughts, I had to figure them out on my own. But the rest, I knew who I had to ask to get answers. I barged into Hart’s office and she stared at me in surprise.

“Frank, it’s past curfew—“

“I know the truth.” I said immediately. So yeah, I didn’t really know all of the truth, but it sounded good – and she seemed to know what I meant automatically. Her eyes widened and she gripped the back of her chair for support.

“How?” She asked quietly before sitting down.

“I overheard you and Officer Dickhead talking last night. And Gerard just told me his side of the story. I added 2 + 2 together.” I said hurriedly.

She nodded her head. “I knew that was you, outside the door.” She whispered. She looked up at me. “What do you want then?”

I stared at her for a long moment before sitting down in the chair across from her, not taking my gaze away from hers.

“Answers.”
