The next few days were interesting. I ended feeling a lot like Paranoid Bob – searching everywhere for cameras and what not. I counted how many guards stood near the front door, and what times their shifts and breaks were. Once again, I felt like I was in one of those teen spy movies. Gerard spent most of his time studying the exits and sketching maps of the hospital, trying to find ways we could get out.

“Are you sure we’ll be able to pull this off?” Gerard kept asking me, nervously.

I would kiss his cheek smile. “Of course we can. You want to see your brother, don’t you?” He grinned and nodded. “Well, then. We can do this.” Already I noticed some changes about him. Even in his appearance – there was more color in his face and he was smiling a lot more now. I just hoped that this did work out. I would feel even worse if we ended up getting caught – and Gerard never met his… Fuck, I couldn’t think like that. He was so happy – this just had to work. It had to.

Hart knew we were up to something. She had Mike watching us every second of every day. Another thing I like about Mike is – even though he’s a pretty cool guy, he’s oblivious to most things, so he didn’t seem to catch on to what we were doing. I don’t think Hart really caught on either – she hadn’t called me into her office, so I assumed that she didn’t know I had told Gerard; which was definitely a good thing.

The funny thing was, the only people who knew what we were trying to do, were Ray and Bob. Of course we hadn’t told them, but somehow they had figured it out. “Can we come too?” Ray asked excitedly one day at lunch.

Gerard and I exchanged nervous glances before Gerard asked quietly, “What are you talking about? Come where?”

If it hadn’t been Ray, I would have said that he rolled his eyes. “Wherever you guys are going – we know you’re trying to escape!” Ray said a little too loudly. I let my head fall into my hands and Gerard put his hand on my shoulder reassuringly.

“Ray, can you try and not let the whole world know?” He said in his calm quiet voice. How Gerard could stay calm during shit like this – I would never know.

Ray turned red. “Sorry. But can we come?” He asked again, hopefully.

“Erm… I don’t know.” Gerard said after a moment, looking at me. I raised my eyebrows at him to say, ‘are you kidding me?’ but he didn’t say anything in return. He shrugged his shoulders and looked back down at his food. Ray sighed and began yapping on about something else, as if he had totally forgotten the previous conversation. Bob kept staring at me with a serious look, and it was starting to creep me out. I could still feel his eyes on the back of my head as Gerard and I went out for Outside Time.

Gerard sat down and crossed his legs, leaning into me. “I feel bad.” He muttered. I frowned. What did he have to feel bad about. “I like Ray.” I sighed. “And Bob. And if we leave this place, they’ll be stuck here probably forever.” He suddenly looked horrified.

“Look, they’ll be fine. Right now, our main priority is getting out of here so we can find your brother. Hell, we’ll probably end up back here ourselves.” He gave me a reproachful look and I chuckled. “Yeah, I know it doesn’t sound so great, but at least you’ll be able to see Mikey.” He smiled and nodded, going back to play with a string on his pants leg. “So how are the maps coming?”

He blinked and opened up the small notebook he had in his hands and I saw a detailed bird’s eye view sketch of the hospital. “There are three main exists.” He said as he moved his finger across the page. “There’s the front door.” He rolled his eyes. “The medical wing exit.” He moved his finger across the page and stopped. “And Hart’s exit.”

I frowned. “’Hart’s Exit’?” He nodded.

“It’s the only exit she’ll leave out of. It’s almost hidden, I saw her walking out the other day. I don’t even think that many people besides her know where it is.” He mumbled.

“So, that’s where we should get out?” I got excited.

“Uh… I don’t know. There are cameras over there. Guess she doesn’t want anyone using it.”

“So, I’m sure if we leave that way that will be the first place she’ll look. And the cameras…” I let my head fell back against the bark of the tree. “Fuck.”

Suddenly another shadow hovered over me. I looked up to see Bob and Ray. Bob looked extremely serious and Ray was grinning. Gerard quickly closed his notebook and sat it down next to him. “Yeah?” I asked, squinting.

“We want to help.” Bob said, simply.

I stared at him for a moment before motioning for them to sit down.

“Ray’s got a plan.” Bob said, slowly sitting down.

Oh great.

Ray noticed me roll my eyes and a hurt expression came over his face. “It’s a good one, I swear!” Gerard looked interested so I decided I’d listen. Ray started talking like a hundred words per second, and I had to strain my ears just to catch every single word. After he finished, out of breath and grinning, Gerard looked at me with an open mouthed expression.

“Ray, that’s…” Ray’s smile faltered a little bit. “a really good idea.” He grinned and punched the air with his fist.

“So when do we do this?” Gerard asked, curiously.

I frowned and open my mouth but Bob spoke up before I could.

“Tomorrow.”
