There was Frank. He looked so happy to see me. I hugged him. Then there were voices. So we ran.
He nodded his head then paused and shook it. I raised an eyebrow, unsure of what he meant. He sighed. “I’m excited, because I want to see Mikey. I want to know that he’s okay.” I knew a ‘but’ was coming. “But…” There it was. “I just, I’m scared.” His voice got small. “I haven’t been out there in almost six years.” He bit his lip. “I’m just scared.” He repeated, his voice now barely audible.
I squeezed his shoulder. “Hey… It’s going to be fine. I’m gonna be out there with you.” He looked up at me with a blank expression. “What? I know kung fu!” I really didn’t, all I knew was from old Jackie Chan movies, but it made him smile. “I’m not gonna let anything happen to you.” I kissed his lips softly and he leaned back into me. “We should go to sleep. We’re going to need our energy for tomorrow.” He sighed and wrapped his arms around my torso.
“Can’t you sleep over here?” I chuckled, he sounded so desperate as if he had forgotten my bed was only a few feet away. I took one look into his big green eyes before nodding my head. He let go of me and moved back, laying down with his back against the wall. I laid down next to him and pulled the blanket over us before wrapping my arms around him. He fell asleep almost immediately, with a small smile on his face – but sleep never seemed to come to me.
I hadn’t realized it was morning until I heard Mike’s familiar knock on the door. I shook Gerard and he opened his eyes slowly. “Hmph?” He grumbled.
“Today’s the big day.” His eyes slowly opened wider as realization swept through him. He blinked a couple of times before sitting up so abruptly he almost pushed me off of the small bed. His eyes were as wide as golf balls as he began to breathe deeply saying ‘Oh, my God’ a couple of times. “Hey, don’t be so nervous.” I whispered. He took a deep breath.
“I can’t help it!” He mumbled, leaning into me again.
“It’s gonna be fine.” I assured him and he nodded his head. “C’mon, let’s hurry and get to breakfast, then do this shit, alright?” He nodded again and left his backpack near the door. We casually walked to the cafeteria and sat down across from Ray and Bob. Ray was bouncing up and down with excitement and I shot him a look. He shrugged. Bob was being his normal quiet and calm self. Gerard was glancing over his shoulder with anxiety and I just sat there, calmly eating the shit that they call ‘oatmeal’. It was silent at the table before Mike knocked on the bottom part and said, “Five minutes.”
“Oh, my God.” Gerard whimpered, almost choking on a piece of toast.
“Chill, Gee.” I sighed, rubbing his back. Bob nodded at me and slowly got up from the table, Ray close behind him. “You ready?” I asked Gerard, and he slowly nodded his head. We got up and put our trays on the cart. “Okay, I’m gonna go get the file, you keep Hart busy – just like the plan, alright?” He nodded and I kissed his cheek before running out of the opposite site of the cafeteria.
I waited behind a corner near Hart’s office until I saw Gerard knock on her door. He had moved his backpack near the door but behind the small book case so she couldn’t see it. She smiled when she saw him and he smiled back. “I need your help with something.” I heard him say quietly. She frowned and nodded, following him away from the office. I knew the door locked once it closed, so I ran towards the door, grabbed Gerard’s backpack and silently went through the door before the lock clicked.
I took a deep breath, trying to let my heart beat slow. I went through the files until I found Gerard’s. I picked it up and looked through it. There – on a small sheet of yellow paper was Mikey’s name and an address. I stuffed the whole file into my backpack, before running out the door. I peeked around the corner and caught Ray’s eye. He grinned widely.
He took a deep breath and started running down the hall. “THEY’RE HERE!” He screamed at the top of his lungs. He pulled the fire alarm and a loud blaring noise erupted throughout the hospital. Patients were being taken out of their rooms by confused Supervisors and I searched the hallways for Gerard. I felt a hand grab my shoulder and turned around. It was Bob. He had one of those ‘laser pens’ that I recognized from Hart’s office, in his hand and he pulled me towards ‘Hart’s Exit’.
“Gerard’s not here.” I hissed, but he kept pulling me. He stopped in the hallway and put a finger to his lips. He pushed the top of the laser pen and a small red beam escaped from it. He couldn’t be serious. He turned it towards the camera lens and all of the sudden I heard a click. Then he turned it towards the other one – and I heard the same click. He took a few steps back, and then motioned for me to follow him. That dude will never cease to surprise me. “Gerard-“ I tried to speak again, but he shook his head, shoving me out the door.
I heard it lock once he closed it.
I hated loud noises. They made my head hurt. But I knew I had to deal with it, when the fire alarm went off. That was the plan. “What do you need help with, Gerard?” Ms. Hart asked looking down at me. I blinked and looked around. Why hadn’t the alarm gone off yet? “Gerard?” I stared at her. I suddenly got mad.
“You should have told me!” I yelled. “You should have told me Mikey was okay.”
She turned pale. And her hand went to her chest. “How did you—Frank… Gerard, listen to me.”
There’s the alarm. Water rained down. “Frank!” I turned around and ran for it. She couldn’t keep up. She was wearing those tall heels. I heard her cursing as I ran away. I stopped near her office, my ears ringing. Where was he? He was supposed to wait. He left me. He just left.
I could still hear Ray screaming. Saying the ‘aliens’ were here. I made my way to the exit we called ‘Hart’s Exit’. I saw Bob leaving the hall it was in. He nodded towards me and I ran. Opened the door. There was Frank. He looked so happy to see me. I hugged him. Then there were voices.
So we ran.
