“That fucking sucked man,” Gerard says as we drive towards his house after spending an hour and a half cleaning lockers to no avail…they are still covered in colorful writing.

Instead of answering Amanda just looks out the window lost in a world all her own probably mentally preparing for what is about to happen to her. She always gets really quiet before going into get tattooed. I guess I kinda do the same thing.

“You gonna come with us or you wanna go home?” I ask Gerard as I slow the car down to almost a stand still in front of his house.

“Needles aren’t my thing,” he answers leaning over the passenger seat to kiss my little sister on the cheek. “Bye baby, remember to call if you need to.”

She nods kissing him for a second before closing her eyes. Something is wrong I can tell and I’m sure Gerard can too but he says nothing just waves and heads to his house. I hate it when she does this. Amanda tends to hide her pain, trying to stay strong for everyone around her.

“Everything alright?” I ask as we head towards the little tattoo parlor just a few miles from the Way house.

Amanda looks as if she’d just seem a ghost, “I’m just fine Frankie.”

Shaking my head I turn into the parking lot smiling when I seen Leighton and Andrea’s little red car. I’m glad they actually came, now the assistance manager will have someone to talk to while he waits to close the shop. Plus I’ll get to see Leighton who I’ve been dying to talk to since Sunday when we kissed.

“Bob,” Amanda calls loosening up as we step into the parlor, “We brought you a friend.”

“Bobert!” Andrea squeals as her boyfriend pulls her into a bear hug as she giggles.

Leighton smiles over at me, waving as Amanda goes to sit down with Jimmy to discuss what else is going on her arm. Wrapping my arms around Leighton’s waist I let her rest on my lap as I watch my sister. She laughs at something Jimmy says, flexing her toothpick arms. He rolls his eyes before bringing out the needle smirking as her eyes grown wide.

“How are you?” I whisper into Leighton’s ear as a shiver runs down her spine.

“I’m alright…its a little cold in here,” she answers hugging herself.

Not really noticing, I shrug out of my hoodie and hand it to her. Leighton slips it on backwards, pulling the hood up over her head before turning to me and laughing. She’s cute.

“How am I supposed to do this –” I pull down the hood and press my lips to her's for a short moment before raising the hood again – “when you’ve got that thing covering your face.”

Leighton simply shrugs, pulling the black hood off her face laughing as she watches Bob give her sister a piggy back ride around the small shop floor. They are both giggling, Andrea gently beating on Bob’s back yelling ‘Faster horsie, faster.”

Amanda giggles causing Jimmy to glower at her, the needle held inches from her colorful arm. He’s a great artist he just doesn’t always have very much patience for those who can’t sit still. I have to admit he doesn’t seem to be bothered by Amanda’s fidgeting.

“You wanna skip school tomorrow and just jam?” Leighton asks me turning sideways on my lap and putting her arms around my neck.

“As much as I’d enjoy that I’m not sure Mr. Greene would be too happy with me and I’ve already got detention,” I answer with a frown. I would have loved to spend the day with Leighton. “Maybe some other time?”

She nods smiling at me, “Why do you have detention?”

“Amanda,” I answer wishing I had just staid out of it. I can’t help being her brother but I really could stop jumping down people’s throats every time they say something about her. She brings it upon herself most of the time.

“What did she do?” Leighton questions glancing over at my sister who is beating on Jimmy’s chest as he squeezes her, both of them laughing. Sometime I wonder how she’s still with Gerard. I think if she flirted with guys that heavily all the time I would have dumped her ass.

“She had to be all self righteous and go after John,” I answer as if the whole topic bores the hell out of me.

“I heard she broke his nose,” Bob says putting Andrea down and kissing her on the forehead.

“You heard correct,” answers a figure in the door who sound royally pissed off. “I just came down to check on you Amanda. I see you don’t really need me.”

I turn to see Gerard, illuminated red, green and yellow by the sign over the door, his hair is wet and he’s wearing those pants Amanda loves so much. His eyes are all screwed up and he’s frowning at Jimmy and my little sister who both looked completely shocked.

“Gee,” Amanda says her breathing speeding up as tears spill over her cheeks. “Gee I’ve know Jimmy since I was little. Gee, nothings going on. Gerard....”

She gets up from where she sits walking towards him, reaching out for him but he moves out of the way, “I don’t care. I’m just gonna go.”

At that he lets the door slam in my little sister’s face. She looks broken, literally falling to pieces on the cement floor, one tear at a time. I’ve not seen my little sister cry in almost two years. In a way I feel bad for her then again she was the one flirting with Jimmy.

Leighton gets up off my lap motioning for me to go to my sister, “Amanda…he’ll come back.”

“No,” she shakes her head, black eyeliner marks on her face. “He’s not coming back Frankie.”

“What do you mean?” I demand. What does she know that the rest of us don’t?

Just then we can hear sirens outside and we all go silent for a second, just tradition. A moment of silence for whatever person is in need. Amanda burst out into tears again as her phone goes off, the ring tone for an unknown number.

I take it from her and answer. The words that follow kill me.

“This is the Belleville hospital. We are calling you in regards of Gerard Way…he’s been hit by a car tonight and is in intensive care. You were an emergency contact. We could not get through to his parent,” a nurse says and I can still hear sirens in the background. “Is this Amanda Iero?”

“This is her brother, we’re on our way,” I reply before looking down at my sister. “We’re gonna go to the hospital now.”

Her watery eyes grow but I don’t have to say anything, she already knows. I watch her degrade to a simple rag doll, able to be pulled around by whoever needs her to move. She’s broken and will probably blame this accident on herself.

About twenty minutes later, Bob, Andrea, Leighton, Amanda and I are all standing outside the big window watching Gerard sleep. There are tubes coming out of his arms and nostrils, a light beeping can be heard from the heart monitor through the open door.

“Excuse me,” Amanda says weakly to a nurse. “I know this is crazy but do you have a piano here?”

The nurse chews on her lip a moment before nodding and walking away. Why my sister needs a piano I have no clue, she’s not played in almost a year…not since Joey died.

About ten minutes the nurse comes back rolling a brown piano in front of her. Amanda thanks her a few times before pushing the thing into Gerard’s room, the rest of us coming to sit around it, just listening.

As she plays the first few notes I already know what song it is. As she plays she sings, tears running down her face and onto the black and white keys.

I know there's something in the wake of your smile
I get an notion from the look in your eyes...yeah
You've built a love but that love falls apart
Your little piece of heaven turns to dark

Listen to your heart when he's calling for you
Listen to your heart
There's nothing else you can do
I don't know where your going, and I don’t know why
But listen to your heart before
You tell him goodbye

Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile
The precious moments are all lost in the tide...yeah
They're swept away and nothing is what it seems
The feeling of belonging … to your dreams

Listen to your heart when he’s calling for you
Listen to your heart
There’s nothing else you can do

I don’t know where your going, and I don’t know why
But listen to your heart before
You tell him goodbye

And there are voices, that want to be heard
So much to mention but you can’t find the words
The scent of magic the beauty that’s been
When love was wilder…then the wind

Listen to your heart when he’s calling for you
Listen to your heart
There’s nothing else you can do
I don’t know where your going, and I don’t know why
But listen to your heart before
you tell him goodbye

Listen to your heart
I don’t know where your going and I don’t know why
But listen to your heart before
You tell him goodbye

Her voice falters at the end right before she lays herself down on the piano and closes her eyes, the rest of us sitting silently…tears in our eyes.
