More Than Coffee and Comic Books
0 ReviewsWhen I tuned back into my surroundings, I found Ray sound asleep in a corner and Isabella dosing off on Frank's shoulder. Shannon and everyone else who was still awake were debating what type of music to listen to, if any. I tried to rearrange myself to sit a little straighter when I saw Maria heading our way.
"Hey Eva! It's getting pretty late and I was just wondering if there was anyway I could help you clean up?" She smiled and shoved her hand into her back pocket.
"Of course! Thanks! Let's start in the kitchen." She nodded and floated out of the room. Before I followed her, I turned once more to Mikey. "Please Mikey, I'll be right back."
"Okay. Are you sure you don't need any help?" He loosened his grip around my waist just enough for me to escape. I crawled backwards out of his lap and laughed.
"I'm sure Mikes. I think I am perfectly capable of cleaning up a little." I heard him sigh behind me as I headed for the kitchen. Maria had already found where we keep the garbage bags, and was filling one when I joined her. "Thank you so much Maria! I can't thank you enough for doing this."
"No big deal! I actually had a lot of fun tonight." She tied off one of the bags and tossed it onto the ground with a clang. "If you want to finish up here, I can start on the living room." I nodded and she scurried off with her garbage bag in hand. I filled up another garbage bag and tossed a everything from the sink into the dishwasher. When I checked the clock on the wall, I was surprised to see that it was only 1 a.m.. I actually thought that it would be later. There was some type of sticky liquid on the counter top, so I fished around in a cabinet until I found some wipes. By the time I was done scrubbing and sanitizing, Maria had returned, but with Shannon and Mikey in tow. "Hey Eva, i think I'm gonna take Shannon home before she passes out here." I wiped my hands on my jeans.
"Are you sure? You are more than welcome to spend the night here. I have a bed upstairs that you can use if you want." Maria reached out to steady Shannon.
"No, I think we better go. Thanks though." I, unlike Shannon, was still kinda sober and could handle myself pretty well. I didn't realize it until now, but Mikey hadn't even had a full cup of liquor. I thought that he had at least 2 or 3, but I was wrong. Since she doesn't drink, Maria was the designated driver. I hugged both girls goodbye, and watched as they headed for the door. They had just pulled the door open when I turned to Mikey.
"Can you make sure they get out okay?" I asked, looking up at him. His eyes sparkled and he nodded. I wasn't used to seeing him with contacts. He followed them out, and I crept into the living room. Everyone was completely crashed; sound asleep. I could still hear some snores as I dashed up the stairs. I needed to change. Even though the windows were closed the thick, Jersey summer air was suffocating. I pulled off my skinny jeans, sweater and tank top, and exchanged them for some cut off sweat pant shorts and a different tank top. Since everyone was asleep, I didn't have to cover my bandages. I pulled my pony tail holder out of my hair and slipped it on my wrist, running my hand through my hair as I padded my way back down the stairs. Mikey was leaning against the kitchen table with his back to me.
"Hey!" I called out to him. He turned around and smiled one of his breath taking smiles that gave me butterflies. He met me half way and wrapped me in his arms. My head rested in one of the grooves of his chest.
"Hey lady. You tired?" I nodded, and Mikey's arms slid lower around my waist. "Well then I think we should get you some sleep." He lead me into the living room and quickly threw together a make shift bed on the couch. He motioned for me to lay down, so I did, eager to rest. Then he covered me up with a blanket and headed to the other side of the room to flip off the lights. Although it was dark, there was still some light in the room. I watched as Mikey folded his arms under his head and stretched out on the floor in front of the couch. I laid watching him for a few minutes, before I uncovered myself and threw the blanket over my shoulder. I got up from the couch and laid next to Mikey on the floor. I tried to cover us up with the blanket before crossing my arms the way Mikey had done, and using them as a pillow. I closed my eyes, and was on the verge of sleep when I felt Mikey pull me closer to him. I laid my head on his chest and wrapped my arms around him. He gently brushed away my hair and brought his lips to my forehead. "Good night beautiful" he whispered so quietly that at first, I thought I was imagining it. Then, he kissed my temple. I smiled into his chest and wrapped my arms tighter around him. What was happening and why so fast? It seemed like in the blink of an eye I was falling into something that I couldn't, and didn't want to, escape. Could it really be love?

"Good morning." I heard someone whisper. A warm hand ran up and down my arm giving me goosebumps. My eyes fluttered open to find Mikey smiling his best crooked smile. I smiled back.
"Good morning." My voice was groggy. It took me a few seconds to realize that Mikey wasn't hungover, but he was still acting so affectionate. I pushed the blanket off of me and sat up, pulling my knees to my chest. "You want some coffee?" I asked, standing up and immediately covering wrist with my other hand. Mikey draped his arm over my shoulders and led me into the kitchen.
"Sure" He said smiling down at me. I moved over to the coffee machine and started to brew a pot. Mikey left my side for a minute to grab two mugs from a cabinet and set them on the table. I heard him pull out one of the kitchen chairs. While I waited for it to brew, I waltzed over to the table. I reached out and laid my hand on Mikey's shoulder.
"Did you sleep okay?" I asked, rubbing his shoulder. He grabbed my waist and gently pulled me onto his lap.
"Yea, it was actually pretty decent for the floor." He answered, resting his head on my shoulder. I laughed.
"Mikey, you know you could have just slept on the couch?" He nodded,
"I know, I just didn't want to make such a bold move like that....if you didn't want me to." I could hear hints of laughter in his tone, which made me laugh even harder.
"You don't make bold moves?" I asked. Mikey snickered.
"Not usually." The beep of the coffee machine, sent me off Mikey's lap with the two mugs in my hand. After filling them with the steaming liquid, I headed back to the table. I set them down and brought back sugar and creamer. I took my seat in Mikey's lap and began adding in his sugar, when he reached out for my bandaged wrist. I stopped what I was doing and dropped them back into my lap, trying to hide it from him.....but it was too late. Mikey shifted a little so he could see my face. He gently picked my left hand up and flipped it over, revealing the bandages. Gently, Mikey pulled off the bandages. I tried my best not to wince by biting my lip. When the first of the the raw, pink cuts were revealed, he gasped a little. When all of the bandages were removed, he sighed but kept my wrist in his hand. "Eva, Eva. Why would you do this? It's so.....so...it's just not right." He whispered the words into my neck. His fingers traced the tender cuts, making my skin tingle. His face was pressed up against my neck and exposed shoulder. Suddenly I felt something warm and wet, patter against my skin. Slowly, I turned to face Mikey. I single tear left a path down his cheek. I took his face in my hands.
"Mikey.....what? Why are you crying?" I felt my chest get tight as I wiped away his tears with my thumb. He shook his head and his voice quivered.
"I hurt you." was all he said. He took my hands in his and dropped them into my lap. "I caused you this pain. It was my fault that you did this to yourself. I was drunk Eva. So drunk that I said things to you that I never should have. I am so sorry." Now I was the one shaking my head.
"No, Mikey. It's not your fault! I-" Mikey cut me off. His tears had stopped, but his voice still cracked with pain.
"It was me. You never did anything wrong. You helped me. You helped me find the strength to break off something that was pulling me down. You opened my eyes to something that was right in front of me, but I was too blind to see. You are the one who made me realize what I really want." Now I was the one crying. Was this normal??? "Please Eva, don't take the blame for this. If I was a better friend, and completely wasted, I could have stopped you! But I didn't. I made you fell guilty when in reality, all you were doing was opening my eyes and saving me from something I could have never escaped on my own." I didn't know what to say or what to do. Finally, Mikey broke the silence. "Look, I'm sorry about this, about all of this. I would understand if you don't want to be with me, because it all happened so fast, and I didn't mean for it to happen that way, but I just couldn't really contain myself, so I'm sorry but you just make me feel so-"
"Mikey." I interrupted, standing up and pulled him up with me. It was almost like he didn't hear me, because he continued to ramble. "Mikey!!!" That time he stopped and looked down at me.
"Yea?" He asked, ready to start blaming himself again. I wrapped my arms around his neck, stood on my tip toes and kissed him, like I'd always wanted to. He kissed me back, but with passion and apology and realization. Without breaking the kiss, he picked me up and set me on the counter where our height was more even. When I finally pulled away, I kept my arms wrapped around his neck and pulled him closer. "Now do you get what I was trying to say?" I breathed into his ear. He nodded, pushing our foreheads together. I was positive there was something between us now. Something more the coffee and comic books.
