I wasn't able to read your story very well because it looks like one giant paragraph. From what I could read, the plot idea sounds somewhat like the plot of one of the Stargate Atlantis episodes. I would suggest waiting until later in the story to reveal the reasons as to why they do this. That's the sort of question that would keep me reading to find out the answer to.
