CHAPTER 26 – THE FIGHT TO SURVIVE

She had no memory of her trip in the dart that took her from there to the hive ship and was reintegrated from there into a laboratory deep within the hive, arriving crumpled on the floor and in pain, with four wraith soldiers holding weapons on either side of her. She took a deep breath, but there was severe pain in her stomach, and she wondered if she was going into labour. She closed her eyes, choosing not to move, ignoring the command from the wraith to do so. Concentrated on her breathing... in... out, and visualised the boy inside her who was upset and agitated. He sensed the danger and he sensed that in this state, he would be unable to help her and it would be up to his mother to use her own strength to save them both.

“Human! You will rise now. The Queen wishes to see you immediately in her chamber, then you will undergo the tests.”

He mind flashed momentarily on what he had said. Tests? On her baby? And felt the sickening dread that there was no getting out of this mess that she had gotten herself into.

Two of the wraith held her upright between them. The pains in her stomach had lessened and she wondered if it was simply the warning from her son to pull herself together and focus and to stay alive. She managed to get one arm to reach across her stomach slightly and stoked it, to ease his mind. She would be strong for him...

The Queen was sitting in her throne chair when Cassie was brought in and Cassie firmed her resolved, looking the Queen straight in the eye as she was brought before her.

“Cassandra Devon. We meet finally in the flesh and not just in the mind. I have been looking forward to this for some time. You are a formidable oponent my human friend, and I have to admit to feeling a measure of respect for someone of your strength. You have almost bested me in our mind duals, and that is an uncommon experience for me.”

Cassie stared at the cold yellow eyes that flicked restlessly over her, coming to rest on her burgeoning stomach. “You won't have him, he's mine and one day, he'll destroy you. But you know this don't you, you know that this is his destiny, so you seek to destroy him before he destroys you. You cannot change what has been put in place... you are one woman and a much weaker opponent.”

The Queen hissed in anger. “Insolence! You cannot dictate to me what I can and cannot do. If I wish to destroy him, it will be done. You are still only one human, and while I concede that you are the strongest I have seen, you still show the inherent weakness that is found in all humans.”

Cassie smiled then, a cold smile that did not reach her eyes and brought a tiny fissure of unease to the Queen. She did not understand this human, and while she gave off the air of confidence that she would destroy her, she felt... something... intangible that protected her and knew that it would not be such as easy task.

“Take her away.” she ordered the guards. “Take her to the laboratory. We need the child and we will use the medicines that we have been experimenting with to bring him into this world early.”

The guards picked her up and began dragging her from the room, screaming back at the Queen as she left. “You'll not get my child... he's mine... you'll not have him!”

She was returned to the laboratory and thrown rather roughly onto the floor, causing a spasm of pain to shoot through her stomach. Tears fell in abandon, and cradling her stomach she looked up at the lone wraith who stood over her, dressed in a laboratory coat and willed herself to find the strength to carry on, until John could come... please John, I need you... I can't do this alone, and our son... he wants to help, but he is not yet able. Find me... find us.

She was picked up off the floor, as though she weighed nothing, and placed none too gently on one of the observation beds. Straps were positioned at either end of the bed, one set for her legs and another for her wrists and she was quickly bound and now lay helpless and in fear. The wraith approached her, staring intently into her eyes.

“You are the one who the Queen seeks information and knowledge from. Your child holds the key and she wants this key for herself. Tell me, human... will he live if we take him out of you now? The physiology of humans is still new to me, although I have been experimenting on your kind for some time now. It is weak... and cannot withstand pain or deprivation for long periods, so which shall we try with you first? I wish to see how much your child can withstand before we bring him into this world. Hmmmm?”

“Go to hell!” She spat in his face, then looked inside her for the place where she could find a measure of peace, where she could merge with the mind essence of her son and and attempt to deflect the pain and humiliation she would be put through.

She found him there, calm and emerald green, no electricity this time, as though he sensed she needed the rest and calm. Her purple and orange mingled briefly with his and she felt the comforting touch and embrace and allowed her mind to drift, as though on an ocean where nothing tangible could touch her.

He attempted to break through the barrier she had put up. He did not offer her sustenance until the second day, and she took it sparingly, not for herself, but her her son, then went back to the calm place, knowing that her son remained safe for now. A tiny portion of her mind registered the methods of pain he inflicted on her. Her arm was broken, then broken again and occasionally the pain would drift closer to the centre of her consciousness, then the emerald green of her son's mind essence would forcefully push it back, outside the conscious thought, so that she drifted still...

At one point she left her son and shot a blinding jet of white hot pain into the mind of the Queen and heard her screen in agony and felt a moment's satisfaction that she had managed to deflect some of her own pain to the Queen. But she could not sustain this for long, as it allowed her own pain to enter through the barrier that had been put up.

Hurry John... you need to come soon... I can't hold out for much longer... it hurts...

The wraith continued his testing of her pain threshold for three days, monitoring the effects on both her own body and mind, and on her child inside her. He had monitoring equipment, similar to scanning equipment, and constantly ran it over her so that he could view the child inside her, and nodded his head as he watched the agitated dance of the child as he sought to escape the intrusive scanning.

“The child is aware... he has so much more power than a normal human child. I see why the Queen wishes to have him for her own.” The wraith scientist peering down into Cassie's eyes, seeing the brilliant green and wondering at the strength of this woman, felt even a little awe at what she had chosen to withstand.

“It is time for him to enter this world. I will ready you. The medicine will cause pain and it is uncertain how long it will take.”
She struggled against the straps that held her, weaker now having had little to eat in the few days since she had been on the hive ship. She had learned that the Satedan children were being kept in the cocoons for later feeding and felt a loss so deep when she thought of little Kiesha, the girl who had already been through so much in her life. And she thought of her precious son, so strong to hold on this long, and now perhaps, it will soon be over for them both.

I've lost faith John... I know you would have gotten us out by now if you had been able... goodbye my love, I wish our last words hadn't been in anger, but I can see your face in front of me now, and I'll keep it there until this is over...
