Stake My Heart

"I was staring into the same hazel-green eyes, but these were the eyes of a dying man." Sad Frerard. Implied vampirism. Inspired by Vampires Will Never Hurt You. R&R for more of these!

This came to me while I was listening to one of my favourite songs; Vampires Will Never Hurt You. I've never really written anything sad before and I'm not a hugely emotional person anyway so I'm sorry if this doesn't turn out how I planned it to. Though I hate comparing my work to this, if I had to describe this story I'd say it was a little Twilight-ish. Not annoying over-the-top love scenes, sparkly so-called 'vampires' or a constipated looking Robert Pattinson. But a tragic one-shot with implied vampirism.

[DISCLAMER] I did not intend this to turn out at all similar to Twilight and the storyline is completely fictional. I do not own Gerard or Frank (yet) and they probably aren't vampires. Although that would explain why they never seem to age...

Please R&R if you enjoyed! :D

Stake My Heart

White wisps of fog curled like pale, damp claws at the edges of my vision. They reached out towards us; twisting and fading as the sky took on a deep grey-blue colour, the last morning of our existence.

“Don’t think like that” Gerard whispered, still caring what I thought, though we hardly had any time left.

“Don’t read my thoughts then.” I replied automatically, my voice cracking half way through as I failed to keep my calm expression in place. I bit my lip hard and choked back the tears that were threatening to fall, knowing that once I started crying; I wouldn’t be able to stop.

A ghost of a smile flickered over Gerard’s face, and his hand reached shakily up to stroke my cheek. “You’re not going to die Frankie. I won’t let you.”

“You won’t be able to stop me” a huge sob erupted from my throat and I squeezed my eyes shut in an attempt to stop them from leaking, only to snap them open again so I wouldn’t miss another second of Gerard’s life.

Tears were streaming down his face freely now, but he made no attempt to wipe them away. He was too weak.

Seeing in his eyes what he wanted I shifted from where I was sitting next to his beaten, broken body, and curled into him with my head in the crook of his lily-white neck which was drenched in sweat.

We lay there quietly for a few minutes listening to his harsh, laboured breathing, unwilling to break the soothing silence. But far too soon the first few rays of golden sunlight came up.

“Frank” Gerard shifted under me, moving only as much as the stake allowed him to. “It’s time.”

I didn’t move right away, but quenched the flow of tears and inhaled Gerard’s blood soaked t-shirt for the last time. He smelt as he usually did; a mixture of coffee, smoke, sweat, blood and mint.

Without warning a distant memory swam through the black fog of my mind.

-Flashback-

Cool air blew my long fringe around my face as I stared, unblinkingly at the pale glare of the full moon in the sky, surrounded by millions of bright, winking stars.

I was so mesmerized by the beautiful Italian night sky, that I didn’t notice Gerard approaching until his cold fingers gently tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.

#“Do you like it?” He asked looking up at the sky with me.

“I-it’s incredible. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” I said, finally tearing my eyes away from the scenery and looking at him.

He nodded in agreement and murmured something intelligible.

“What?” I leaned in closer.

He started, as though he hadn’t meant to speak out loud. He glanced at his feet and I’m sure, if he was able to blush with such little blood, he would’ve been.

“I-I just said, that I’ve seen someone even more beautiful. This doesn’t even compare” He said gesturing towards the sky.

“Who could be mor- oh” As he looked back at me and smiled softly.

“You are, Frankie. As far as I’m concerned nothing will ever compare to how I feel about you.” Then he moved in closer to me and cupped my chin, bringing my face up to his, so that I could feel his cool breath on my lips and see his razor-sharp white teeth. “I love you”

“I love you too” I whispered.

-End of Flashback-

I was staring into the same hazel-green eyes as in the memory, but instead of pure happiness; the present ones were full of agonizing pain. They were the eyes of a dying man.

“F-f-frank p-please” He pleaded as inch, by inch the sun’s harmful rays edged closer to his feet.

My hands trembled as I reached for the stake that was imbedded deep into his chest, not close enough to his heart to kill him immediately, but enough to make his last few hours full of pain and suffering.

He watched as I hesitated before gripping the stake with my hand. “Ready?” I asked, though I wasn’t anywhere near ready to do this myself. We only had minutes left before the sun reached us though, and I couldn’t watch him burn slowly to death, knowing he could’ve had the less painful way.

“Do it.”

I swallowed hard and lifted the stake out of his chest. He whimpered, but stayed still as I raised the stake high, directly above his venom-blackened heart and looked at him one last time.

As I took in his tangled, ebony hair and flawless pale skin, I remembered the most important parts of our life together.

Meeting him for the first time in the middle of the night, and him being unable to kill me, despite my being defenceless and human.

The day he turned me, to save my life as I lay broken on the ground after a particularly bad beating from my father.

When he told me he loved me, on the roof of our house in Italy.

Last night when, finally, the inevitable happened, and the Slayers found us. He’d turned to me and said “I’ll never let them hurt you. I promise.” And had gone on to fight the hundreds of stake ridden humans, knowing that there were too many to defeat, but unwilling to let them kill us both.

When, just as we thought there might be a chance of us escaping; the last surviving Slayer jumped out of their hiding place and stabbed Gerard straight through the chest.

When it had finally hit us, that Gerard was dying, and we’d sat crying and saying our last goodbyes to eachother.

I wished we could stay here forever, reliving our greatest memories. But his ankles were beginning to smoke by now, and I knew it had to be done.

I looked into his scared eyes and whispered quietly, knowing he could hear me.

“ti amo, mi sono innamorato di te.”

And then I plunged the stake into his heart, hearing his silent scream fade as his beautiful body burst into flames that he wouldn’t be able to feel.

And despite, his promise that I would survive, I let the flames swallow me whole too.

The last thing I saw was the smoke from our bodies, curling around each other like snakes. Twisting and fading, like pale claws reaching towards us and luring us into the darkness.
