So let’s set the world on fire,
We can burn brighter than the sun
Walking back to my car, I jam my hands in my jacket pocket. I think about what I said, about having everyone find their own way home. I won't leave them here; I'll just wait until they are done. They have no other way home, after all...well Amber has her fucking fancy BMW but…I’ll just wait.
I get in my car and sit in the driver's seat, arms crossed, pouting, staring out the window, watching them having the time of their lives.
I watch Amber wrap her arms around Mikey, beaming up at him like a proud parent. She takes his beanie and puts it on. Mikey lets her do it like it’s not a big deal. The two chase each other around the football field laughing, play fighting over Mikey’s beanie. She’s so cute…I kinda wish that was me. It’s not of course because with good croquet skills comes girls like Amber and I suck at croquet. I scoff, yet another thing Mikey can brag to me about; getting the girl.
Behave Gerard Way, that all she ever says to me. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Behave, ha, like that’s even possible. My entire life is one big fucking misbehave. I’m not changing. That’s probably why Amber likes Mikey more than me.
I watch as Frank joins in, letting Amber crawl onto his back, then galloping around the football field Mikey and Ray at their heels. Amber leans down and presses her lips to Frank’s temple. He nearly drops her but Ray is there to catch Amber. The whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach.
I wait for what seems like hours for them to finish up goofing off on the field. It isn't even bright outside anymore by the time Mikey, Amber, and Frank stumble towards my car. In truth they all look a little high.
Mikey’s beanie is lopsided on Amber’s head, Mikey with his arm around her shoulders. Ray and Frank laughing up a storm at something Mikey had just said. They look like they’ve had a genuinely good time. Maybe they aren’t high on anything but life.
As they all pile in Amber sticks her head through the passenger window, looking at Mikey, his beanie still covering part of her blazing red hair. She smiles widely at my little brother and he smiles back looking happier than he has in years.
“Can I please have my beanie back?” Mikey questions, giving Amber puppy dog eyes.
She giggles, shaking her head, “I’ll give it to you tomorrow.”
Mikey sighs but nods, giving in too quickly. I wouldn’t have let her keep it. He smiles again, giving Amber an awkward hug through the window.
“Behave….” Amber starts but I cut her off.
“Yourself Gerard Way…I know, I know,” with that I throw my car into reverse, back out of the parking lot, shift gears again and drive off at top speed.
Ray and Frank are sliding around in the back, screaming, as Mikey braces himself against the dash, his face still twisted into the stupid smile.
I chuckle at them all acting like babies. I’m not really driving that fast.
"Fucking....shit Gerard, slow down!" Frank yells. “Even Amber doesn’t drive this fast.”
I laugh even harder, shaking my head. This is what they get for laughing at me beating the shit out of myself with a goddamn mallet all day long.
I slow down at the stop sign, smirking while they all get buckled. They’re lucky there was a stop sign there because the road ahead is nothing but twists and turns for a few miles.
I glance in the rear view mirror to see Frank holding his chest, breathing heavily, almost having a panic attack. Then, he giggles, throwing his arms in the air.
"Holy shit, I’m immortal!” he yells, pumping his hands in the air as he say ‘shit’ causing everyone to erupt into another fit of laughter.
I drive on, until we get back to my house.
