Mikey's POV

We arrive at the hospital fifteen minutes later, finding a space to park. I jump out of Ronnie's car and run towards the entrance of the hospital.

"Where's Gerard Way?" I pant when I reach the front desk.

The receptionist looks up at me in astonishment, before clicking her mouse a few times. "He's in ward 5, room 17. You can't see him yet, but there's a waiting room up there." She smiles sympathetically.

"Thank you so much!" I gush before sprinting off to find my brother.

After fighting my way through the maze of white hallways and up flights of stairs, I finally reach ward 5. Fuck, how do i find room 17? I turn around and see a doctor at the end of the corridor.

"Excuse me? Doctor? Yeah, could you tell me where room 17 is?" She walks over and smiles.

"Actually, I was just headed there now. Are you a friend of..." Ooh, british. She checks her chart. "Mr. Way?"

"I'm his brother, Mikey. Can you show me where-"

"Mikey!" I turn around to see Frank sitting hunched over on a set of chairs at the opposite end of the corridor to me and the doctor.

"Frank!" I run towards him, leaving the doctor standing there alone. As I get closer, I see the tear stains trailing down his cheeks. He stands up as I get nearer and I grab him in a hug.

"I'm so scared, Mikes." He sobs into my chest.

"I know, me too. Have you got any news on him?" I feel him shake his head.

"They won't let me in there." He pulls away, wiping his eyes with his sleeves.

"Why not?" I ask, worried. I begin to feel my eyes well up with tears as I remember the damage caused to my brother.

"I don't know, they wouldn't tell me." I frown and turn to the doctor, who is just about to open the door to a room with the number 17 on it.

"Hey, Dr...?"

"Rae. But you can call me Stevie." She smiles.

"Is he okay? Why won't they let us in to see him?" I sniff.

"He's fine, we've stopped the bleeding and we just need to stitch the cuts on his head. It's just standard procedure, it won't be much longer now." I look at her closely and I feel as though I've seen her before, she seems really familiar.

"Okay, thanks so much, Stevie. Will you come and get us when you're done?"

"Of course. Don't worry about him, he's in safe hands." She rests a hand on my shoulder before entering Gee's room.

I walk over and stand by the window. He's just lying there, shirtless, covered in bruises and bandages.

"Frank?" I turn around and bite my lip nervously.

"Yeah?"

"Did you know about... About Gerard... cutting himself?" He looks at the floor and stifles a sob.

"I told him to tell you. He's gotten better since I found out, he hasn't done it as much. I'm sorry for not telling you, I just thought it was something that he had to do."

"I understand Frankie. But now you see why I said you're good for him? These past couple of weeks he's been the happiest I've seen him for years. Thank you so much." I say genuinely, rubbing his back soothingly.

"He did it all himself. He's brilliant... I mean it, when I find the bastard responsible for this... GOD!" He shouts, standing up abruptly.

He starts pacing up and down the seating area, looking into Gerard's window every time he passes it. We both turn at the sound of people talking loudly to each other, accompanied by fast walking.

"No, it's this way! She said room 17!" Becky.

"Yeah, I thought that was back there?" Oh, Bob. So clueless.

"Believe me, I know my way around here." Just as she finishes speaking, they round the corner. Becky, Bob, Ray and Ronnie trailing behind them awkwardly.

When she spots us, she begins running over, the others not too far behind.

"Where is he? Is he okay?" She pants, and I gesture to the window that Frank is looking through.

"Dude... You okay?" I turn to look at Bob, giving him a weak smile. "Come here, 'bro." He steps forward, wrapping me in a hug.

"Bob, I'm fine. I'm not the one lying in the hospital room. Thanks though." I pull away and smile, tapping his cheek playfully.

I look over to Frank, who has been joined by Becky. She has her arm placed awkwardly round his shoulder, unsure of how to comfort someone. I know it's a big deal for her to be that close to people, so the gesture makes me smile a little. I walk over to them and stand beside Frank. He's crying steady tears, not making a sound as he does so.

"I could have stopped this." He says suddenly, breaking the uncomfortable silence. I turn and look at him.

"I'm sorry, what?"

"I could have stopped this whole thing."

"How could you have done that?" I ask impatiently.

"If I had gone home with him at lunch. I shouldn't have fallen asleep. If I hadn't fallen asleep I would've gone with him. If I had gone with him, he wouldn't be here now. If I'd been a good friend, a good BOYFRIEND, he wouldn't be here now." He cries softly.

I turn his face to me and slap him hard across the cheek. The loud slap rings out along the hallway, our group of friends turning to look at us in shock.

"Mikey... What the fuck?" Bob shouts angrily. I just focus on Frank, who has a hand to his reddening cheek.

"... OW!" He screams. "Why did you do that?" His tears gone, now replaced with anger.

"Don't you ever say that again! This was no one's fault, least of all yours! The only one who could've stopped this is the bastard who did this. You hear me? Don't you EVER say that you're a bad boyfriend. You've done everything for Gerard, you're everything BUT a bad boyfriend." I point my finger in his face, leaning in closer as my voice raises in volume.

He looks at me, eyes glistening and lip trembling. I pull him in for another bone crushing hug, both of us crying on each other. We spend a good five minutes like that, just standing there holding onto each other.

We're all sitting around in the hallway, Me and Ray on the chairs, Bob on the floor and Frank standing up. Ronnie and Becky appear round the corner holding six cups of coffee. Each of us accept our cups gratefully. I look over to Ronnie and smile slightly at him. Yeah, he was a dick, a complete and utter asshole, but he saved Gerard''s life. He could have just left him there, but he didn't. He helped him and stayed with him. Hell, he's still with us. Maybe he has changed.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts by Stevie coming out of Gerard's room.

"Stevie, how is-" I'm cut off by Becky, who sounds very shocked.

"Mum?! What are you doing here?"

"I work here, darling. You know that." Becky shrugs and goes quiet again.

"Wait. You're Becky's Mom?!" Frank asks, coming up behind Stevie.

"I knew you looked familiar!" I shout in realization.

"Yes, but I'm not sure that's the most important matter now. You'll probably be wanting to know how Gerard is?"

"Yes! Is he okay? Is he awake?"

"He is, but he's not speaking yet. I want you to understand that if I let you in there you won't get him over agitated or anything like that, okay? He's been through a very traumatic ordeal and he needs his friends around him right now."

"Yeah, I know. Anyone who had been beaten up that badly would be shaken up." I say matter-of-factly. Stevie looks at me, pity covering her expression.

"Beaten up?" I look at her with an eye brow raised. "I think it's best if you come over here with me for a second. Maybe Frank might need to come as well." She turns on her heel and walks down the hallway a little. When she stops, Frank and I just stare at her expectantly, wanting to know what's going on.

"Not to be rude or anything doc, but would you mind telling us what the hell is going on?" Stevie starts to look nervous, as if unsure of how to phrase what she wants to say.

"Well, boys. Gerard was beaten, yes. Oh, I don't know how to break this to you... Right. His injuries were pretty bad, he has four cracked ribs and one broken. He had pretty extensive head wounds, he's had 23 stitches. He lost a lot of blood. The thing is, he also shown signs of other injuries." She looks down uncomfortably.

I look at Frank and shrug, laughing slightly to reduce the panic building up inside whilst fiddling with my half empty coffee cup. "W-What injuries?" I swallow hard, trying to rid my throat of the horrible lump that's lodged itself in there.

"... Gerard was raped."
