Gerard’s POV
The day without Ray to protect me is going as expected, I was already called out, pushed into a locker, and I even have a nice black eye now. I huddle in the corner of the hallway so I can eat my lunch without it being easily stolen. That doesn’t stop the gang from pushing me over onto the floor and stealing my sandwich, along with my English project.
“This should come in handy, thanks Geetard.” John smirks and kicks me. I curl into a ball and wipe my eyes viciously as I try not to cry. “Awwh look at the little baby, can’t stand up for himself while his boyfriend is gone.”
“He’s not my boyfriend!” I start to pick up my books.
“Oh yeah? Then what is he, faggot?” John smacks the books out of my hands and shoves me against the wall.
“A friend.” I sigh and lean down to pick them up again.
John grabs me by the collar of my shirt and slams my head against the wall. “Look at me, you fucker.”
I look at him and spit in his face, then I kick him where it counts and grab my books.
“You’re gonna pay for that, faggot!” John yells and I scramble down the hall into an empty classroom. I squeeze myself into a small supply closet and bite my lip as I close the door as quietly as I can. I shake as I try to dial Ray’s number on my cell phone and shake as it rings. Pick up...Pick up...Please Ray, pick up... I think.
“Hello? Gerard?” I sigh in relief as his voice comes from the receiver.
“Ray...please come and pick me up from the school...” I can’t help my voice from shaking.
“Gerard, what’s wrong?” I hear the panic in his voice.
“I stood up to John-” I drop the phone in mid-sentence and look up. John is standing in front of me.
Ray’s POV
My phone rings and I jump in surprise, usually no one calls me. I grab the phone and look at the number. I bite my lip, it’s Gerard who’s calling. I answer, “Hello? Gerard?”
“Ray...please come and pick me up from the school...” Gerard’s voice is shaky.
I start to panic then. “Gerard, what’s wrong?”
“I stood up to John-” Before Gerard finishes there’s a loud thud, like the phone had been dropped.
“Gerard? Gerard are you there?” I panic more. I hear screams and shouts. “I’ll be right there!” I shout and hang up. I rush out of the house and down the street. I have never run so fast in my whole life, sharp pain fills my chest as I run. I get to the school and push through the doors. It isn’t hard to find him, loud shouts come the room at the end of the hallway and I rush into it. There’s a circle of kids around Gerard and John that I push through. Gerard already has a bloody nose and tears running down his face. “Leave him alone.” I say.
John’s expression quickly turns from a smirk to a look of fear and he says, “Sorry man, I don’t want no trouble.” He gestures to his friends and they leave along with all of the other kids. Gerard quickly runs into my arms, crying. “Thank you, thank you thank you thank you.” He says over and over.
I hold him close to me. “You’re okay now...it’s okay...” I say and Gerard shakes more.
“Mr. Toro.” I sigh and pull away from him. I turn to face Ms. Jenkins, she’s scowling at me. “You are not allowed on school property while on suspension.”
I cannot take it anymore. I glare at her and shout, “Well I don’t see anyone else protecting Gerard! No teachers were here to stop it!”
“Do not shout at me, Raymond.” She says.
“Whatever.” I roll my eyes and take Gerard’s hand, I start to lead him through the door.
“Gerard still has school to attend.”
I turn to face her. “Gerard has enough going on at home right now, he doesn’t need to be bullied on top of it.” I give Gerard a tissue to wipe the blood from his nose, he says a quiet ‘thank you’.
“Well he can talk to our guidance counsellors about his problems at home. Would you like an appointment, Gerard?” Ms. Jenkins’ expression softens as she looks at Gerard.
Gerard obviously shakes his head and looks at the floor.
“We can help you if you need it.” She says.
“It’s...fine...” He forces out.
“It really isn’t, Gerard...” I say.
He sighs.
“Come with me you two. I think this needs to be sorted out.” She walks through the door. Gerard sighs and reluctantly follows, I follow behind him.
We wait out in the hallway for what seems like forever. We sit quietly for the most part, not making any conversation. It felt like we didn’t even know each other, he didn’t look at me, or smile, he just stared at the floor.
“Listen...” I break the silence. “This is really for the best...”
“How do you know?” He wipes his eyes with his sleeve.
“As much as I can’t stand Ms. Jenkins, she can help you. You won’t be in this situation anymore.” I respond.
“We’re lying and saying that I’m just stressed out from school.” He says.
“Gerard...”
“No, Ray. That’s what we’re saying, and if you spill the beans, well, I guess you’re not a true friend.” Gerard wraps his arms around himself.
I sigh and look at the wall. The door to the office opens a few minutes later and the secretary comes out. “You may come in now, Ms. Jenkins is ready.”
We both get up and walk into the office. We go into the back room and sit down on two puffy black chairs in front of Ms. Jenkins’ desk. She stares at us for a few moments. “So...” She begins, “What is exactly the problem?” She’s looking right at Gerard.
“I’m stressed.” He says, not making eye contact with anyone.
“From what?” She asks.
“School.”
“Well I never imagined you’d be stressed, you’re doing so well in all of your classes. Exceeding the educational standards as well as the other students’ averages. It must be hard on you, though. Just think, one more year and you’re all done with high school.” Ms. Jenkins gives a small smile.
Gerard nods and looks down.
“Is something else on your mind?” She asks after a minute of silence.
Gerard shakes his head.
“Would you like to talk about it in private? Without Raymond here?” Well I guess in her own mind she’s trying to be nice.
Gerard shakes his head again.
Ms. Jenkins had a look of worry on her face now. “Gerard you know you’re safe with me, right? You can come to me with anything, anything at all. We can get you the help you need.”
Gerard nods. “Can I go now?”
“Not until we fix this.” She pushes.
“No one can fix it. No one can know.” Gerard says in a monotone voice.
“Gerard please...” She’s really worried now. I didn’t know she actually cares about us kids.
“He’s being raped by his father.” Gerard gives me the death stare and I feel a pain surge through my chest. I can’t believe I told her.
