Chapter 26- The Reckless And The Brave.
"GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!" I scream excitedly as I run through the front door of the Way house, leaving Mikey and the others trailing behind. Gerard's been off school for the past week so he can recover from the... colourful events of last week. I haven't seen him all day, so you can probably see why I'm excited. I get to see my Gee bear!
I don't really know how to explain Gerard's behaviour as of late, he's really just kept quiet, kind of like when I first met him... He doesn't seem as depressed as he was, though. He's been fine with me, loving and sweet as always, but you can tell his whole mind isn't quite on the current situations, he's always got thoughts rattling through his mind. Mikey says he's been perfectly happy, hasn't shown any signs of... well, of cutting. At least he doesn't think so. I trust Gee though, he promised me he wouldn't do it. I confronted him about the cuts he made the day Andy showed up at the house, and he just looked down in shame. He explained why he did it, and promised to stop. I think that's when he started going downhill, but then again, with what he's been through lately, it could be a whole list of reasons....
I snap back into reality, running into the front room. "Hey, Ger-" I stop. "Gerard?" He's not in here. I shrug it off and walk through to the kitchen, thinking he'll probably be making coffee. "Gerard?" Not in here either. I sigh and slump against the door frame, a frown fixing itself upon my face. A long yawn escapes from my mouth, and I realise just how tired I really am. I haven't slept much lately, too worried about my Gee. Speaking of which... He must be down in his room. I push hard with my shoulder against the wood to get me moving again. I hear the front door close as I'm about to leave the room. "Hey Mikes!!! Make me a coffee! Pleeeeaaaassseeee!!!" I bellow through to the hallway.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you little nut job."
"Hey, I heard that!!!" I hear him laugh quietly. "Whatever, bitch. I'm just going to see Gerard, kay?" I leave the kitchen and cross the small bit of carpet to Gee's room.
With a creak, the door eases open, revealing the dim lit room below. I descend the stairs, bouncing on my toes slightly, and humming the tune to a christmas song.
"Geraaaaard?" I jump the last three steps, landing flat on my feet, which causes me to stumble a little. When I stand up straight again, I'm greeted by the sight of Gerard sitting in the middle of the floor with his back to me. Just one look at him removes all light hearted feelings in my body, worry slowly rising to the surface.
"Gee?" I can see his head tilt ever so slightly in my direction. Only slightly, the movement so small I barely notice it. I glance around the room, searching for any clues as to what's wrong. I spot his jacket on the floor beside him, his arms bare and glowing in what little light there is in the room. My heart starts beating faster, panic bubbling up inside of me. What has he done?
"Gerard, what are you doing?" Still no response. I swallow the lump in my throat, coughing to make my voice clearer.
"Gerard, you're starting to freak me out. What's wrong?" I hear him sigh loudly, a mixture between frustration and relief.
"I didn't do it." He says simply. I stop edging forwards, my worry now forgotten, replaced by confusion. What didn't he do? Making sure I'm being quiet and careful, I tiptoe round him, so I'm facing him front on. My eyes immediately go to his arms, checking for any recent lacerations. The sight of the old scars makes the lump reappear in my throat, and I feel a pang of guilt. As far as I can see, there isn't anything worrying covering his skin, no sign of blood or tears. He actually sounded rather calm.
I'm still confused though.
I sit down in front of him on the floor, crossing my legs. I'm trying to read his expression carefully, when a sudden gleam of light hits the corner of my eye. I drop my gaze to his hands, where I see a large, rectangular piece of shiny metal. His razor...
"Gerard, why do you have that?" I ask suspiciously, my eyes flitting between his face and the razor.
"I didn't do it." He sounds a lot more happy this time, a faint smile playing at his adorable little lips. "I didn't fucking do it!" He breaks into a full on grin, each of his tiny little teeth glowing in the dark.
"Well, Gee, I'm very happy for you, but what didn't you do?" I ask, humour in my voice.
He looks up at me, raising the hand that holds the razor. "I didn't cut!" He laughs.
I smile at him, still feeling a little confused. "Were you going to? I don't understand..." He face falls slightly, but he's still smiling.
"I've been alone in the house all day, and you have no idea how much I wanted to cut. I've been sat here with the razor for about three hours now, and I haven't done anything. The most I did was put it up against my wrist, but I stopped myself. I thought of you and Mikey and how much it would upset you guys, and I just couldn't do it." He sighs. "Your happiness is more important than that." I look at him, my eyes swimming with tears.
"Gee, I'm so proud of you!" I gush, throwing myself at him and engulfing his body in a tight hug. I hear a clang of metal hitting the floor and I feel his arms wrap themselves around me just as tightly. "I knew you could do it."
"Thanks, Frankie. I just hope I can keep it up." He sighs against me, his breath tickling the back of my neck. I pull back enough to see his face.
"Just think of now, and stay positive. One day at a time, Gee." I put my hand under his chin and bring his face forward, connecting our lips.
He doesn't resist at all, his lips reacting instantly to the touch. I climb onto his lap, wrapping my legs round his back. We sit there for ages, just kissing as we forget everything else around us.
"Frank!!!!" Great. Mikey always has to ruin the moment, doesn't he? I sigh and reluctantly pull away from Gerard.
"What?" I shout back, giving Gerard one last peck on the lips before standing up.
"Your coffee's ready! I made one for Gerard too!" I smile and look back down at Gee, who is now grinning like a maniac.
"He made coffee?!" He asks excitedly. I nod, laughing.
"Wanna go up?" He nods and stands up, taking my hand a leading the way up the stairs.
"Wait-Gerard." I stop walking, holding him back. He turns around and looks at me, confused. "Don't you want to put your jacket back on? I thought you...." I trail off upon seeing the look on his face.
He looks down at his arms, a frown fixed upon his face. After a minute of doing that, Gerard looks back up at me and shakes his head.
"I'm not ashamed anymore. Everyone up there is pretty much family, and if they can't deal with it, then it's their problem." I smile back at him, my chest swelling with pride as I look at how much more confident my angel has become. I give him a big kiss on the mouth, pulling away and grinning at him.
"Okay, then. Let's go." I grab his hand again and bound up the stairs, dragging Gee behind me.
We're both laughing as we crash into the kitchen counter, making everyone in the room jump.
"What the fuck has got into you two?" Mikey asks laughing. We don't reply, just carry on giggling our heads off. Mikey just looks around at Alicia, then Becky, silently asking for a reason for the giggling. They just shrug, smiles on their faces.
We stop laughing, and stand up straight. "Sorry, what we meant to say was 'Hello'!" I wave stupidly, while Gee just says hello behind me. I look around to see Ray, Bob and Ronnie standing in the room also. "I forgot you guys were here." Everyone just gives laughs of disbelief, thinking we're being stupid obviously.
Mikey stops laughing as he catches sight of Gerard's jacket-less arms. He just stares at them, and I can see his eyes turn glassy. Gerard notices too, because he lets go of my hand and walks over to him. He whispers something to him, and Mikey smiles slightly before hugging him tightly. When they pull apart, Gerard looks at Mikey.
"Can I talk to you outside for a second?" Mikey sniffs and nods, smiling lovingly at his brother.
The rest of us follow them with our eyes as they leave the room, none of us speaking.
"So....." Becky says, breaking the awkward silence.
"So." I repeat, laughing quietly and smiling at my friend.
"Not to be rude or anything, Frank... But how come Gerard isn't wearing his jacket? I thought he was... you know... embarrassed." Ray asks awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck as he looks to the floor.
"It's not rude to ask that, Toro." I smile at him. "Gerard isn't ashamed of it anymore, and he trusts you guys well enough not to judge him for it. Because it's now in the past, and he's trying to get over it. He didn't cut today, you know. He told me how much he wanted to, but that he didn't because he wanted to stay strong for me and Mikey."
"That's so great, Frankie!" Alicia squeals happily.
"So, is he okay now?" Ronnie asks shyly from the corner of the room next to Bob.
"Yeah, he is. He really is." I smile as that thought floods my mind.
