Sixteen Years Later

1986

I take another deep breath to calm myself down, but anyone in the room could tell I'm nervous. My legs are jumpy from adrenaline, my hands are clammy, even my breathing is becoming shaking with each passing moment.

I anxiously glance over at the clock once more. 12:45.

Damn.

Only five more minutes until its my turn to meet and greet with one of New York's best modeling agents, Faith Kates.

I lean forward and bury my face in my hands.

What if they don't choose me?/ What if I'm not good enough for this agency? /Then what will I do?

"Miss, uh, Everly?" A soft, yet firm voice says at the door. I look up to see a woman with a very delicate frame, perfectly styled hair and makeup, but a serious look on her face. It was clear she meant business, which only made me more intimated.

"Please step into my office." I hesitantly stand up and follow her through the door. The entire office area was dead silent and painted only white.

Great, I thought, Now I'm really going to have a shitty interview because I'll be squirming around from discomfort.

She unlocks her door and reveals a very posh looking room. "Come, sit, sit." She orders while pointing to a burgundy cushioned chair. She pulls out multiple files from a cabinet and spreads them across her desk.

"Ok, I'm Faith Kates, and we looked through your head shots and were very impressed with you, Miss Everly. Tell me do you have an experience in modeling?"

I shake my head but realize that she's not looking up so she didn't see my reaction.

"No." My voice sounds like I swallowed drywall.

"Mhm, well I'll tell you one thing you have marvelous cheekbones and a good, strong jawline. But you left patches in your profile, so if you don't mind I'll be asking some questions. Ok?" I nod.

"Well for starters how tall are you?"

"5'6."

"How much do you weigh?"

"Um, around the 116, 120 range." I hear the pencil scratching at the paper as she jots down the information.

"Ok, now here's a big question that we really need to know here at Wilhelmina. Why do you think you have what it takes to work for us?"

Panic flashes through my body. I knew this question would come up, but I kept praying it would bypass.

Come on Erin. Think!

"Any day, Miss Everly," Faith says, getting impatient.

"Uh well, I just…I just think I have enough potential. I have the spirit and everything. I want it more than the blood in my veins." Faith laughs at my usual comment. I feel my face burn up and regret the comment almost immediately.

"You really want it that bad, Everly?" She asks, amused.

"Yes, ma'am," I manage to sputter out.

She stares at me for a good minute or two. It's like she's staring into my soul. Like she's sizing me up to determine whether I'm cut out for this job or not. She finally cracks a smile, stands up, and extends her hand towards me.

"Miss Everly, welcome to Wilhelmina Modeling Agency. We look forward to working with you." I squeal in excitement and couldn't contain myself enough to stop from jumping up and down.

"Oh my God, thank you so, so, so much. I won't let you down!" I say while shaking Faith's hand so rough I think she was scared I might break it off. God knows I was.

"You're very welcome, Miss Everly. Of course I'll be representing you and I'll try to find work for you as soon as possible. But for now, here's my card and if you have any questions give me call."

I graciously take the card from her and hold it like a precious diamond. "Will do. Thank you so much."

I leave the office with a goofy grin on my face.

Finally, I thought. My life is finally going good for once.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I quietly open the apartment door to see my roommate and best friend, Taryn, asleep on our stained beige couch. I met Taryn when I ran away from home and moved to New York to be a model.

If it wasn't for Taryn then I probably would've died on the streets. I was stupid. I had no money, no plan, no real way of survival. Taryn found me in an alley, hunched over to try and stay warm, and being the saint she is she took me in.

She asked me why I was here and I told her about my story. That I needed to get out of there. I just had to.

My mother went insane around the time I was ten. I think it had to do something with, not only my father's beatings, but a few weeks after the event he went out for "cigarettes." He never came home. Never called, never visited.

Gone. Just like that.

I shutter at the memory. More like the lack of, though.

Taryn began shifting around signaling she was waking up. I walk over and shake her shoulder slightly.

"Taryn," I cooed. She stirred.

"Taryn, get up," I added a little more force in both my voice and shaking.

She groaned. "Do I have to? I just got off work."

"Yes! I have some exciting news." She didn't need much more coaxing after that.

She sits up. "Ok, ok. Talk." Her hair was a mess from the pillow and she had crease marks on her arms and face from the material of the couch.

"Well you know how I went to that modeling agent's office earlier? Faith Kates?" Her smile begins to grow.

"Yes."

"They accepted me! You are looking at the Wilhemina  Modeling Agency's newest model."

"Oh my God, Erin. That's great!" She says grabbing my hands and jumping up and down with me. "Now you can pay for your half of the rent." I stop jumping and laugh.

"Is that the only reason you're happy? Because I can pay my part?"

"No, Erin. I'm truly happy for you. And just to prove it, we're going out to celebrate. There's a party downtown at my friends house. He said some new band from Los Angeles will be there. So, what do ya say? Wanna go?"

I thought about it for a moment. One simple little party isn't going to hurt, right? I nod. "Yeah, I'll go. On one condition, though."

Taryn looks at me amused. "What's that?" I smirk.

"Whoever comes home first with a guy gets the bedroom. The other one has to fuck on the couch. Deal?"

Taryn returned the smirk. "Deal. Now c'mon, little Miss Glamorwood, let's get you ready for your first New York party!" She yells.

I bursted out laughing. "Hopefully it'll be a memorable one too."
