  I think that its best you try to contact the author first and ask if its ok for you to finish their story for them x

  I think it's a great idea... contacting the author would probably be good, but if you simply continue the story, I don't think it should be any harm. (I mean, if someone did that for all my abandoned stories, I would be flattered.)
