The Way Household, 6:00 in the morning

"Daddy, Daddy!" The little girl ran down the hallway and into her father Gerard's art studio.

Gerard scooped up the five-year-old and held her in his arms. "What's up Hozzie? Excited for the trip?" She nodded happily and he grinned at her, carrying her into the kitchen where Hozzie's uncle Mikey stood.

"Gee you'd better start packing the car. I'm ready to go." Mikey stood up, yawning and stretching his arms. Gerard rolled his eyes comically.

"Took 'ya long enough. What were you packing, your whole comic book collection?" Hozzie giggled at Gerard's comment.

"C'mon we have to go before the sun goes up! Daddy, you said we had to make sure Mommy didn't know." Hozzie whined, pulling on her father's leather jacket. He sighed and let her down.

"I know, I know. Go get in the car, okay hun?" He smiled. She grinned and ran out of the room.

Gerard sighed and put his face in his hands. "I'm in deep shit, Mikes."

"You're going to have to tell her soon that you guys are getting a divorce. That's the reason were taking her to the cabin, right? So she can't get custody of Hozzie?" Mikey questioned. Gerard grunted.

"Yup. I just. . . I dunno how she's gonna handle it is all." He sighed and grabbed the suitcases and walked out to his Honda Civic. Mikey followed and got into the passenger's seat. Gerard put the suitcases into the back and strapped Hozzie into her car-seat. "You ready Hoz-Dog? We're going to spend a couple days at the cabin." Gerard said to her. She kicked her legs in anticipation.

"We can go swimming, look for bugs, get fishies. . . " Hozzie trailed off thoughtfully and Gerard got into the driver's seat, starting the car. He drove out of the small subdivision.

Lake Victoria, The Cabin, 3:45 p.m.
"Yayyy we're here!" Hozzie cheered as the Honda pulled up to the cabin. It was weather-beaten and old but had a home-y look to it. The inside consisted of a small kitchen, a living room, two bedrooms, and a loft where Hozzie would be sleeping.

The car stopped and Mikey got out to unstrap Hozzie. "'Ya ready, munchkin?" Mikey joked, pulling her out of the car. He held her for a moment before tipping her upside down and tickling her sides.

"Stop it Uncle Mikey, it tickles!" Hozzie shrieked. Gerard ran up behind Mikey and grabbed him.

"I've got the big. bad wolf! RUN HOZZIE!" He yelled. Mikey dropped Hozzie on her feet and growled for effect as she took off laughing.

Gerard smiled and pushed his matted hair out of his eyes. "Can't ever get mad at that kid. They grow up so fast." He commented. Mikey grinned and elbowed him in the sides.

"'That kid' is running towards the water. You better catch her before she gets her dress wet." Gerard's eyes widened.

"Damn!" He ran after Hozzie yelling like a overprotective mother. "HOZZIE!! YOU DIDN'T GET YOUR SUNSCREEN ON!! DON'T PRETEND TO IGNORE ME I KNOW YOU CAN HE- OH NOW IT'S ON." He laughed as Hozzie stuck her tongue out at him and waded into the cool water.

Gerard got to Hozzie and dunked her in the water, laughingly scolding her. "That's what'cha get when you don't listen!" He said. Hozzie squirmed and jumped on his back.

"DADDY, I'M GONNA SPLASH YOU." Hozzie shrieked, long black hair flowing in the breeze.

In the Cabin
Mikey, Gerard and Hozzie walked up the hot boardwalk and into the air conditioned cabin. They were sopping wet and had sand stuck all over, even in their hair. Gerard picked up Hozzie and let her sit on his shoulders as they walked inside.

The furniture was made of waxed oak, the floors were wooden yet soft, and the air had a musty smell to it. Gerard set Hozzie down and she climbed the ladder to the loft. "Daddy do I have to stay up here all by myself tonight?" Hozzie worriedly asked. It was already 6:30. Gerard shrugged.

"Well you are a big girl now but I guess we'll see when it's bedtime." He said. Hozzie whimpered and he groaned. "C'mon Hoz, don't do that! You know that's my weakness." He sighed. She giggled and climbed down where Mikey was sifting through a plastic bag, looking for the marshmallows. He thought Gerard was standing next to him and handed Hozzie some matches. She stared at him for a moment before shrugging and skipping outside toward the fire pit.

"Gee, I think we're out of chocolate. . . . Gee?" Mikey looked up and saw Gerard lounging on a couch in the other room. "Fuck." He mumbled.

"What is it Mikes?" Gerard called.

"I gave the matches to Hozzie!" Mikey hissed. Both men stopped what they were doing and ran outside to see Hozzie sitting in the fire pit, playing with a dead squirrel. The matches were nowhere to be seen. "Hozzie, hun, where'd you put the matches?"

"Nevermind the matches, why are you getting your clean clothes all dirty? I just changed yo-WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING?!!!" Gerard screamed and snatched the rodent from her hands. Hozzie's blue eyes widened and she burst into tears. Her daddy never yelled at her or swore. Gerard threw the thing to Mikey who squealed and tossed the dead squirrel into the lake.

"I'm sorry Daddy. I was trying to wake the squirrew up." Hozzie sobbed. Gerard sighed and sat down next to her. He lifted her up and sat her on his lap. Mikey looked away awkwardly.

"It's alright, it's okay. I'm sorry I yelled at you, baby, I didn't mean to scare you. Daddy just wanted to keep you safe." He murmured. Hozzie nodded tearfully and buried her face in his arms.

"I think I ought to just put you to bed. You look tired." Hozzie yawned as if agreeing and Gerard stood up and carried her back to the cabin.

"What am I, chopped liver?!" Mikey called indignantly.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Gerard carried Hozzie up into the loft and dressed her into her favorite teddy bear-covered flannels. He tucked her into bed and kissed her goodnight. As he was walking out Hozzie called out to him.

"Daddy? I don't want to be in here alone." she whispered. Gerard sighed and left the door open. Hozzie smiled. "Thank you, daddy."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hozzie tossed and turned that night, shivering in her sleep. She subconsciously stuck her thumb in her mouth and kicked the blankets off. She was having a bad dream where her mommy and daddy were yelling at each other really loudly, and she was hiding in the cupboard, to scared to come out.

"YOU BETTER STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME, GERARD WAY!" Her mom screamed at him, backing up behind the counter. Hozzie whimpered as she peeked through a crack in the cupboard door.

"THEN STAY AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER, DAMMIT." Gerard roared. Her mom gave a look of surprise but regained her anger.

"HOLLIE IS MINE AND WHEN WE GO TO COURT, THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT YOU'RE GETTING HER." She shrieked back. Hozzie didn't really understand what they were saying. She only knew that both parents wanted her and that they were swearing really loudly.

"NO NO NO NO NO. YOU DON'T FUCKING GET IT. I'M TAKING THE BITCH AND THAT'S FINAL!!" Then Gerard did something Hozzie thought she would never see. He raised his hand and slapped her mom across the face. Then he turned to the cupboard as if he could see her. Hozzie bit her lip and waited for him to drag her out.

"Hozzie. . . . Hozzie. . . . Hozzie wake up. . Hozzie!!"

Hozzie shot up and found Gerard shaking her, a worried look on his face. She flinched and he pulled her closer to him. "What's wrong? We're you having a bad dream?" She burst into tears and nodded.

"Awww honey. . Come here." He let her sob into his arms as he rocked her back and forth gently singing S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W/, a song from his band My Chemical Romance.

". . . . I'll keep you safe tonight. Yeah, yeah . . ." He sung quietly.

Hozzie's breathing slowed down and her head tilted forward as she fell asleep again. Gerard sat with her in the dark for a while. How would he tell her about the divorce? He shook his head. He wouldn't. He'd keep her safe, and that's all that would matter.
