INT. SCARECROW CENTER, INTERROGATION ROOM

It is the same day that Don will arrive at the Bunker, but
over in Battery City the reunions are less joyful.

A frail Jane is brought in to an interrogation room in
Scarecrow headquarters. She is wearing a hospital gown that
partially conceals a bandage across her chest.

There is a table, two chairs, and a mirror through which Jane
assumes she is being watched.

Jane leans on the table for support, worried. The worry
doesn't go away when Korse enters.

Korse glares at Jane for a moment, then comes over and slaps
her, sending Jane reeling against the wall.

JANE
Hey, you shot me too.

Korse smiles coldly, then focuses on the bandage. Ripping it
off, he exposes a bright red scar, still fresh. That's where
he shoves her.

The pain almost causes her to pass out. Jane drops to the
ground, gasping.

Before she can recover, Korse picks Jane up by the throat and
shoves her against the wall.

JANE (CONT'D)
I want to talk to Liu!

Korse gets ready for another slap, but Liu enters the room.

LIU
Korse.

JANE
That was quick.

Jane glances at the mirror.

LIU
I was intrigued by your request.

Liu gestures to a chair, and Jane takes it before her legs
give out. Everything is very polite.

Jane starts to regain her bearings, willing the pain to
subside.

Fortunately, Liu appears to be willing to be patient.

JANE
I'm not up for this...was that
interrogation? He never asked any
questions.

LIU
I'm sure he would have gotten to it
eventually.

JANE
Why isn't he dead anyway? I thought
I got in a good shot.

LIU
You have to completely destroy the
brainstem or he regenerates.

JANE
Something to look forward to.

Korse moves forward, as if to strangle Jane, but Liu waves
him off.

LIU
You may go Korse.

Korse glares at both of them, but does leave the room.

JANE
There are things that I am willing
to tell you, and the things that I
won't tell you are things I don't
know, so I don't see any reason why
we can't be civilized.

LIU
What are you willing to tell me?

JANE
First of all, I used to be able to
see a short distance into the
future-

LIU
I suspected there was something
going on there.

JANE
It's why I left, and why I left
with Reyes.

Liu's eyes narrow.

LIU
You do interfere a lot, don't you?

JANE
My point is that it seems to be
over. Since I've woken up I can't
do it. Do you know anything about
that?

LIU
No. That's very interesting.

JANE
When I was looking ahead before, I
couldn't see past getting shot. I
assumed that was because I couldn't
see past my own death.

LIU
But you're not dead.

JANE
I guess I should be grateful, but
it's a bit hard without knowing
what's going to happen.

LIU
My assumption is that I will use
any means necessary to find out
where the girl is, and how pleasant
or unpleasant that will be for you
will depend entirely on how well
you cooperate.

JANE
That's one reason I am happy to
visit with you. I have no idea.

LIU
I don't believe you.

JANE
Still true. After a major action,
we always change locations. Since I
didn't believe I was coming back I
didn't find out where they were
going, and that's working out
better than I hoped.

LIU
You must have some idea.

JANE
None whatsoever. This is partly
your fault, as much as you keep us
on the move. It's been a long time
since any of us have had a
permanent address.

LIU
That's your own fault. If you had
simply taken that research
position, for example.

JANE
If I'm going to live, I need to be
able to live with myself.

LIU
And if I were to set you free, what
would you do?

JANE
Assume I was being followed and not
go anywhere that I thought they
might be.

LIU
That what possible use are you?

JANE
I'm willing to tell you what I know
about my experience with special
abilities, and losing them, and
figure that out.

LIU
You only want that for your own
information.

JANE
True.

LIU
Perhaps we should dissect you.

JANE
You can, but without having blood
samples and brain scans from before
I lost the ability, I doubt it will
do you much good. You have no
baseline.

LIU
Very well. Then perhaps we can
establish that baseline with one of
our students. Perhaps that golden
haired cherub from the hospital.
You remember her, don't you?

Jane stiffens for a bit, but recovers quickly.

JANE
Is experimentation what you want
Grace for?

LIU
No, we wish to take excellent care
of her.

JANE
It's odd to keep a child in a
control room.

LIU
Not with her abilities.

Jane begins to understand.

JANE
You mean with the computers?

LIU
You didn't know that, did you?

Well there's no way she's going to admit it.

JANE
I just think it's a bad environment
for a child.

LIU
She has too much potential to be
wasted in the desert.

JANE
She has too much innocence to be
exploited by you.

LIU
Then I guess we're back to cutting
up Sophie for research.

JANE
I can't believe you. Not for being
cruel-I expect that-but I am
surprised by how stupid you are.

Liu's eyes are becoming deadlier, but her voice remains calm.

LIU
What do you mean?

JANE
The body changes too much through
childhood and adolescence. Starting
testing and saving data now could
be useful in the future, but it
would be years before it would make
sense to experiment with near-death
and death.

LIU
How does our science department get
on without you? I'm surprised by
you too.

JANE
Really?

LIU
I'm surprised that in such a
precarious position you are being
so disrespectful, both to Korse and
myself. It's so unwise.

JANE
I'm surprised by that myself. I
think it might be a couple of
things.

LIU
Perhaps a sense that there's really
no hope for you anyway?

JANE
Yes, but also I think it might just
be that I hate you both so much.

LIU
I don't think there's any point in
continuing this conversation. I
think we'll be asking you about
Grace under more motivating
circumstances.

Liu snaps her fingers and two guards come in, pulling Jane
away.

JANE
And somehow, even without my
abilities, I knew this would
happen.

INT. ENHANCED INTERROGATION ROOM

It has been a long day and it is only getting worse.

Jane is strapped into a chair and hooked up to various wires
and electrodes. Pain is coursing through her body, and she
writhes and sweats.

LIU
Where is the girl?

JANE
I don't know.

LIU
Turn it up.

A masked tech complies.

LIU (CONT'D)
Now tell me, where is the girl?

JANE
I don't know!

LIU
Turn it up!

JANE
But I don't know!

LIU
Turn it up! Where is the girl?

JANE
I don't know, I don't know, I don't
know!

LIU
More power!

As the pain intensifies, Jane tries to get out of the chair.
She screams, and then her body falls back and silent while in
a clouded plane her spirit stands and screams.

JANE
Help me!

Back in the room the tech works to revive her body.

A therapeutic shock sends her eyes flying open.

Jane awakes scared and disoriented.

JANE (CONT'D)
Where am I?

LIU
You're still here.

Jane looks around wild-eyed, taking in the room, and trying
to put the pieces together in her mind.

Liu's piercing gaze puts Jane back on guard.

JANE
Did you just kill me and bring me
back again? You should make up your
minds.

LIU
Take her away.

The techs unstrap Jane.

In the sick ward Jane is tossed into a hospital bed and one
wrist is secured.

That wasn't exactly death, she thinks. What happened?

There are so many questions, and so many things that are
frightening, but her mind can't focus. She is so tired.

Jane drifts off into sleep.

And back at the Bunker, Gerard is wide awake.

CUT TO:

INT. BUNKER

GRACE
She got hurt, but she didn't die.

GERARD
How can you say that?

Gerard is on the verge of freaking out, which the others
recognize.

DEANNA
We should really be going.

DON
She's right. Gee-

GERARD
It's fine. I'm fine.

Gerard hugs Grace again.

GERARD (CONT'D)
You be a good girl for your father.
I'm glad you got him back.

GRACE
I love you!

GERARD
I love you too.

GRACE
Promise you'll go help her.

GERARD
I'll try.

GRACE
Promise?

DON
We need to go.

Don leads Grace out, and Deanna and Rogers follow.

After they are gone, Gerard freaks out in earnest.

GERARD
What did that mean?

FRANK
Probably nothing.

RAY
She's just a kid.

GERARD
She's a kid that they are always
trying to get. What if she's right?

Gerard paces around the room.

RAY
I saw her get shot. I don't think
anyone could survive that.

GERARD
But what if she did? Ray, what
about the scream?

MIKEY
What?

GERARD
Last night I heard her calling out
for help! I thought I was dreaming,
but maybe she needs me.

The other three look at each other.

RAY
We don't even know where to start.

FRANK
She was only there because of us.
We owe it to her to at least try.

MIKEY
Yeah, I say we go.

GERARD
Thank you.

RAY
So what do we do, just waltz into
SCARECROW and start knocking on
doors? Wait!

GERARD
What?

RAY
Natalia.

CUT TO:

INT. BUNKER

Ray, Frank, Mikey, and Gerard are gathered around Natalia as
she looks over the map they had made for the Grace's rescue.

NATALIA
I don't know if this will work. I'm
usually closer to what I'm looking
for.

RAY
We don't have a lot to work with.
Anything will help.

GERARD
Just try.

Natalia moves her hand over the map of the building.

NATALIA
I don't believe this.

RAY
Do you have something?

NATALIA
She is here! I know she is.

Gerard stumbles backwards and leans against the wall.

Mikey claps Gerard on the shoulder.

RAY
Okay, that's great. Can you
pinpoint it?

NATALIA
It feels like it's this corner
here, but maybe I should try the
rest of the building for
comparison.

Natalia sends her mind roaming over the schematics and then
stops in disbelief.

NATALIA (CONT'D)
That can't be right.

RAY
What is it?

Natalia is frantically moving her hands over the map now.

NATALIA
There's a bomb! There's two bombs.
It's rigged to explode!

GERARD
When?

RAY
Where?

NATALIA
This afternoon. The main explosion
will be in the data center, with
another here.

Natalia points out the location.

RAY
This could be our chance to get in.

GERARD
You mean not get her out until
after the entire building explodes?

NATALIA
It's not the entire building, and
you won't be able to get there much
sooner.

RAY
She's off from the main areas. I
think she might be safe.

GERARD
I don't like it.

NATALIA
There's more to it than that. Why
is someone blowing it up in the
first place?

FRANK
There are a lot of good reasons for
that.

GERARD
Can we focus on the matter at hand?
Because I'm going in with or
without you!

RAY
Will you get over your hero complex
for a minute?
We all expected to die for Grace
and we went in anyway because we
knew we could get her out, and that
was enough. I don't think there's
anyone here who isn't willing to
die for Jane.

Ray looks around and Frank and Mikey nod

RAY (CONT'D)
But if we rush in and get killed
like idiots who's left to rescue
her?

Gerard lowers his head.

GERARD
I'm sorry. I know I get difficult-

RAY
No kidding. Look, you're the one
who knows buildings, and you've
been in this one. If the bombs are
here and here, and Jane is here,
what are the odds that she will
escape injury?

Gerard studies the map.

GERARD
Her part of the building should be
the most intact, depending on how
big the explosion is, but we know
nothing.

RAY
I wish we knew what was going on
there.

MIKEY
Is it us? I mean, has anyone ever
done anything like that?

NATALIA
We're usually too busy trying to
stay alive to take any major
offensive action. Even if someone
was able to get their hands on some
explosives, this is in the
building. How did they manage that?

Everyone looks troubled. What are they getting into?

RAY
Well, there's not really anything
we can do about that, is there?

NATALIA
I'm going with you. I'll get off
right after getting into town, and
see if I can hook up with some old
contacts.

RAY
Is that safe?

NATALIA
No worse than what you're doing.

GERARD
All right, so we are in the area at
about the time of the explosion,
and then we go in?

RAY
Their defenses will be down, things
will be confused, it's probably the
best chance we can get.

Mikey goes to storage and pulls out the box where they put
the Draculoid clothing from the Albany.

MIKEY
And this time we go in disguise.

EXT. BATTERY CITY

The van is circling headquarters from a slight distance.

The Ray is driving, with Frank shotgun and Gerard and Mikey
right behind. Natalia is already gone. Everyone is wearing
white.

GERARD
Come on. What's taking so long?

RAY
Just wait for it.

FRANK
Are you sure this is a good
distance?

RAY
Uh, pretty su-

Headquarters bursts out in two large explosions. The area is
now filled with smoke and debris.

The van is rocked, but still upright.

GERARD
We shouldn't have waited! She's
blown up now!

MIKEY
No she's not! That wing is still
standing, and that's where she is.

GERARD
What if Natalia was wrong?

FRANK
Well she was right about two
explosions at two in the afternoon.
I'd say her track record is pretty
good.

GERARD
Right. Right.

RAY
Ready?

There are nods all around. The Killjoys put on their
Draculoid masks and exit the van, making a beeline for a new
hole in the building.

INT. SCARECROW, PRISON WING

Jane is in a hospital bed, hooked up to an IV and with one
wrist attached to the bed with a platic tie.

Jane hears the explosions, and alarms begin to sound.

Her brain is in a fog, but she senses that this is not good.

JANE
Hello? What's happening?

The alarms seem to become more strident, but no one is
coming.

Jane struggles to sit up and get out of the bed. The one arm
restraint makes it difficult, but finally she is on her feet.

Spying a pair of scissors nearby, Jane struggles to reach
them, but they are too far.
Straining more, Jane begins pulling the bed, another inch
more and she is able to grab them. Unfortunately this also
tips the bed, and she and it both fall, pulling out the IV in
the process.

Jane groans on the ground, holding her arm. It is only the
first step to getting free.

She clumsily cuts the tie and pulls herself up by the medical
equipment, groping her way to the door.

Jane opens the door and braces herself on the door frame to
enter the hallway.

There are flashing lights and smoke, and nearby Jane sees a
group of four armed Draculoids approaching. They stop as they
see her, and Jane despairs of making her escape, until one of
the Draculoids takes off his mask, and it's Gerard. She is
almost too shocked to feel the relief. Almost.

Gerard takes Jane in his arms.

GERARD
I thought...

He can't finish so he just holds her.

JANE
How did you find me?

RAY
Okay, that was pretty easy.

FRANK
We're not out yet.

Gerard hears this and smiles back at them.

GERARD
Then let's get out right now.

They make their way back, Jane leaning on Gerard.

A small detachment of guards rushes right past them without
noticing.

Frank whispers to Mikey, pointing at their suits.

FRANK
Good call man.

They are getting closer to the exit when they encounter more
guards. This time someone notices the escaping prisoner, and
that Gerard has not put his mask back on.

GUARD
What's going on here?

Ray, Frank and Mikey efficiently clear the way.

Barefoot Jane sees the rubble and glass, and holds back.

GERARD
This is in no way meant to hurt or
disrespect you.

JANE
Go for it.

Gerard slings Jane over his shoulder. It hurts, but it's
better than not making it out.

Gerard books it to the van, the others close behind. They are
not being followed yet.

RAY
Let's get out of here.

The mood in the van is tense as they make their escape, but
not for Jane. She is too drained to feel anything but content
to be resting on Gerard's shoulder, with his arm around her.

Gerard gently traces the bruises on her face.

GERARD
These are new.

JANE
That was Korse, yesterday. He made
it too. Better than I did.

This is disappointing.

MIKEY
I always knew that guy wasn't
human. What does it take to kill
him anyway?

JANE
Liu said you have to completely
destroy his brainstem.

GERARD
Do you trust her?

JANE
No, but he seemed mad when she said
it.

MIKEY
That's just his face.

JANE
Maybe, but I'd still be willing to
try it. She also said Grace can
talk to computers.

MIKEY
That is true.

RAY
I didn't realize this was a spy
mission. Learn anything else?

JANE
I can't look ahead anymore. It's
not working.

Another disappointment; that was useful. And yet, this is
still enough.

GERARD
It doesn't matter.

Gerard holds Jane closer.

JANE
Where is Grace?

GERARD
She's fine. Don took her to the
Farm.

JANE
Don?

GERARD
He's alive.

FRANK
Didn't you know? This is back from
the dead week. We're really glad
you could play.

Jane smiles weakly.

JANE
Me too.

As they are leaving the city, Ray pulls over.

FRANK
What's going on?

RAY
I'm going to find Natalia.

JANE
Natalia?

RAY
She helped us locate you, but then
she wanted to check with contacts
here to try and find out what was
going on.

MIKEY
How are you going to find her?

RAY
Are you kidding? Today's our lucky
day! We wandered into town, got
the girl, and barely needed to kill
anybody. Besides, someone told me
once that I was a natural leader; I
should probably start living up to
it.

Jane grabs Ray's hand.

JANE
Be careful, Ray. And thank you.

Ray almost gets emotional, but he puts on a mock-exasperated
face, and begins to gripe.

RAY
Don't thank me. I tried to talk
them out of it. I said it's too
dangerous, we don't have enough
information, but did they listen to
me? Noooooooo.

FRANK
It's true. He totally did.

Jane smiles and squeezes Ray's hand.

JANE
Then thank you for not being
convincing. And thank Nat.

Ray squeezes back.

RAY
I'll tell her she can keep your
pants.

GERARD
You know where we're going right?

RAY
Roundhouse. I'll get there.

Ray grabs his regular clothes and takes off.

Frank takes the driver's seat.

FRANK
Come on up with me Mikey. Give them
some privacy in case they want to
make out.

GERARD
Ignore them.

JANE
No, it's a good offer. I just wish
I wasn't so weak.

GERARD
That's probably just from being
bedridden. You have to build back
your stamina.

JANE
That sounds right.

GERARD
I was paying attention.

The van heads towards the hills.

INT. THE ROUNDHOUSE

The Roundhouse is an old train depot.

Berths from sleeper cars have been put into use.

Gerard is sitting on the edge of a berth waiting.

Jane emerges wearing an enormous flannel shirt with most of
the buttons missing. Key areas are basically covered, but
it's not great.

Gerard still smiles.

JANE
I'll have to sew up the gaps
tomorrow.

GERARD
I'm not complaining, but the gown
covered more.

Jane nods, but then shudders a little and shakes her head.

JANE
Too many memories. The Drac clothes
too. Maybe the shoes. I guess it's
dumb-

GERARD
Wear what you want.

Gerard helps Jane into the berth. She is still weak, and
various movements give her pain. It is a relief for both of
them when she is lying down.

Gerard lays on his side next to her, just marveling that she
is there; that they are both there.

JANE
Any chance some of my old clothes
are still at the bunker?

GERARD
Maybe the shirt. We gave your
jacket to Latron.

JANE
The sleeves would be too short.

GERARD
Yeah, but he loves it.

JANE
How is he doing with Otis?

GERARD
Surviving. We gave him your bike
too...

JANE
It goes with the jacket.

GERARD
...and Otis' plant kit.

JANE
Good.

GERARD
Ray was carrying around your
medical bag, but he left it in the
van, so I think that's yours again.
Also, I kept this.

Gerard pulls out the trifold.

Jane chokes up a little.

JANE
I wanted to keep it with me until
the end, but I couldn't bear the
thought of any of them touching it.

GERARD
I didn't know you still had it
until Latron handed it to me.

JANE
It was my lifeline after the
flares. The most perfect gift ever,
and all I got you was some pencils.

GERARD
I loved those pencils. I was going
to draw our dream home with them.

JANE
Really?

GERARD
Then I couldn't bear to use them,
because if they were used up...I
guess I got superstitious about
them.

JANE
What happened to them?

GERARD
Burned with our house. That was
when I really gave up hope. Even
that morning, Don was supposed to
try and find you, and then...

JANE
And yet here we are.

Gerard traces the line of scar extending from Jane's chest.

GERARD
I'm so sorry I left you there.

JANE
Gee, you had to.

GERARD
No, if I had known I would have-

JANE
You would have killed me.

GERARD
No!

JANE
Listen to me! My injuries were bad.
Transport would probably have
killed me, and if it didn't, no one
here would have had the skill or
the equipment to fix me.

GERARD
You shouldn't even have been there.

JANE
Do you know how many times I
watched all four of you die? You
might be my favorite, but I'm
pretty fond of the others too.
They're such good men.

GERARD
I know.

JANE
I did the math and there was only
one right answer. You would have
done the same thing.

GERARD
It's hard letting someone else do
it.

JANE
That's just your ego there.

GERARD
That's what they keep telling me.

Jane smiles, not doubting it for a minute, but then gets
serious.

JANE
We are way luckier right now than
we have any right to expect. Let's
just enjoy it.

Gerard kisses Jane's neck and settles in next to her, ready
to sleep.

GERARD
Can we at least agree on no more
secret plans for a while?

JANE
Deal.

EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF BATTERY CITY

Ray is walking along cautiously, not sure of what to do.

Natalia appears around a corner.

NATALIA
Ray!

They hug, and then look a little surprised at themselves.

NATALIA (CONT'D)
Did something happen?

RAY
Everything was perfect. The other's
are taking Jane to the Roundhouse.

NATALIA
So, what are you doing here?

RAY
I didn't feel good about having
left you here, and then I realized
that I had no idea what to do. Did
I just get lucky?

NATALIA
I checked to see if anyone was
looking for me, and I found you.

RAY
I'm starting to think you have a
lot more ability than any of us
have realized.

NATALIA
I've been thinking that too. I
don't know if it's changing, or if
there are just things I never tried
before. It's a little scary.

Ray nods in agreement, but they don't need to think about
that now.

RAY
Thanks for finding me.

NATALIA
I'm glad I did.

They smile at each other, feeling a little shy, and then Ray
just holds her.

RAY
You know, I've always been kind of
cautious, and I think I'm sick of
it.

NATALIA
There really isn't time for slow
buildups.

RAY
Not when everything else moves so
fast.

NATALIA
Come on. You've got to meet Chuy.

Natalia grabs Ray's hand and leads him down a long alleyway.

Pulling up a grate, they start down some stairs, moving the
grate back into place as they get in far enough.

Natalia leads Frank through long corridors.

RAY
What is this?

NATALIA
It's been here all along and no one
knew. We've only been using the
passageways for a few months.

RAY
Who's we?

CHUY (38) appears from behind a corner, aiming a gun. He
looks a great deal like his uncle, Luis, but a bit taller and
leaner.

CHUY
Who's he?

NATALIA
It's okay. He's one of us. I rode
in with him.

Chuy considers Ray briefly, and holsters his gun.

CHUY
I thought they all left.

NATALIA
He came back for me.

RAY
I was hoping to learn more about
what's going on with the bombing.

Chuy shakes his head.

CHUY
I can't find anyone who's taking
credit for it. Based on the amount
of access they must have had, and
the resources, I'm thinking it was
an inside job.

RAY
From within Blind?

CHUY
Or the government trying to take
back the power. There's been some
rumblings about Liu taking too much
control.

NATALIA
It would be the right place to hit
if she was the target.

RAY
If that's what's going on, what
happens next?

CUT TO:

INT. SCARECROW HEADQUARTERS

The control room is a pile of rubble, but there are still
some signs of life.

Liu is digging herself out from under a desk. Her head is
bleeding, and her movements are slow, but she is beginning to
free herself.

Liu sees where her sword has fallen, just a little in front.
She reaches for the hilt, but Korse picks it up first. He is
undamaged by the blast. He was not even in the building when
it happened.

Korse unsheathes the blade, looking at Liu with cold eyes.

Liu works harder, pulling herself out from the debris.

Before she can rise, Korse drives the sword into Liu's back,
running her through.

Liu stays suspended for a moment, skewered, but soon falls,
her body sliding down the blade.

Korse smiles grimly and turns away.

Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Go and try, you'll never break me
We want it all, we want to play this part
I won't explain or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer for all the broken
Listen here, because it's who we are
I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
Just a boy, who had to sing this song
I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
I! don't! care!
