BRIGHT AND HELPLESS
By Selene Firestone

The wandering mystery
bright and helpless
hopeful wishing to hear you
wanting to hear the stories
dreaming of your voice
the depth of your voice and beauty
the brilliant mystery of the stars
home and back again
far and away from what has been
what used to be
what shall never be again
up on the hill
long kisses rough bright tender sweeter
smaller and sweeter and so precious
growing older but precious still
delicate unsafe
bright and helpless
want to protect what cannot be saved
lost and missed so deeply alone
joking jesting with lightness you do not feel
apples polished bright
with redness appealing in a peel
only this and nothing more can I tell you
or miss when it is not there
all alone all by myself
bright and helpless
but thoughts of you that stay and never leave
held close in desperation
to never be cast aside
my wishes hidden deep
a point of light in the vastness of the dark
out in the emptiness
all that you are
more than you seem
everything to me once
still now and forever
waiting wishing
bright and helpless
