IN JONATHAN'S APARTMENT-DAY
(Music begins, it's a smooth
and harmonious tone. Lights
up. A lone man, sitting in a
wheelchair, writing in a
journal. This is JONATHAN. The
music fades as the scene
begins)

JONATHAN
(Writing)
Its been two years. Two long years since the living hell that
is my life began.
(He pauses thinking of what to
write)
Zero point, A point in ones life were you are stuck between
then and now. A point at which something happens that forces
you to start over from scratch.
(He moves a bit in the
wheelchair)
The moment I got this chair. The moment when I lost her...
(He pauses, thinking of what to
write)

Knock on door.

Jonathan closes the journal and puts it
down before wheeling himself to the
door and opening it

Enter RAMOS

RAMOS
Hey Jonathan, got your groceries right here.
(Lifts bags for emphasis)

JONATHAN
Thanks Ramos, I would starve without your help.
(Chuckles halfheartedly)

RAMOS
Well, you could always go out and get the groceries yourself

RAMOS walks to table and drops off the
groceries. JONATHAN follows behind.

JONATHAN
You know I could not do that.

RAMOS
I see people do that all the time.

JONATHAN sighs

JONATHAN
Well..
(changes subject)
What's the news from out there?

Motions head towards window

RAMOS
Nothing new, same war, different story. So.. Jonathan are you
going to tell Julia.
(He has a serious tone)

JONATHAN SIGHS

JONATHAN
Damn it Ramos, you know I can't tell her, she is in love with
Marco

RAMOS
Marco!? Marco's a Dick. You know he doesn't love her. Not
like you do.

JONATHAN
Look, drop it.

RAMOS
But..

JONATHAN
(Cutting in)
I said drop it.

Knock on door.

JONATHAN (cont'd)
Could you get that.

RAMOS gets up and opens the door.

Enter JULIA

JULIA
Hey Ramos, is Jonathan here?

JONATHAN
Come on in Julia, where else would I be.

JULIA
Hey Jonathan

Walks over and kisses him on the cheek.

JULIA (cont'd)
Sorry I haven't been over in awhile.

She grabs a chair and sits down.

JULIA (cont'd)
Marco has been keeping me busy.

JONATHAN
With?

He wheels himself to a small fridge and
takes out a coke.

JULIA
Well.. I didn't tell you?

JONATHAN shakes his head

JULIA (cont'd)
Oh, well. Marco and I just got back from a weekend in North
Carolina. His family owns a Cabin down there.

JONATHAN
Really? That's nice.

JULIA
Well..

She pauses, trying to hold in
excitement.

JULIA (cont'd)
He asked Me to MARRY HIM

She smiles, letting out her excitement.

RAMOS' mouth drops open. He closes it

RAMOS
And you said?

JULIA giggles

JULIA
I said, yes Silly.

JONATHAN looks crestfallen, but
attempts to look happy for her.

JONATHAN
Congratulations...

JULIA,apparently unaware of JONATHAN's
feelings

JULIA
Thank you. I would love for you to be at the wedding.

JONATHAN
Wedding? You already have a date?

JULIA
Yes. Marco doesn't want a big affair. He says that it should
just be a small thing with family and close friends.

It is obvious JONATHAN is depressed

JONATHAN
When is the wedding?

JULIA
Next Saturday.

RAMOS
Next Saturday!?

JULIA
Yup. Next Saturday. You're Invited too Ramos.

Gets up.

JULIA (cont'd)
Well, I have to go Dress Shopping. I'll see you Saturday

Gives JONATHAN a kiss on the cheek
before leaving.

RAMOS
Now do you see why you need to tell her?

JONATHAN
She is Marrying Marco. It's too late.

RAMOS
Its never too late to tell her.

JONATHAN
Go Away. I need to think.

RAMOS
But... Jonatha-

JONATHAN cuts him off.

JONATHAN
NOW.

RAMOS gets up to leave.

RAMOS
Your going to regret not telling her.

He leaves. JONATHAN wheels himself to
the door and locks it behind RAMOS
before burying his face in his hands.

FADE TO BLACK.

JULIA/MARCOS APARTMENT & JONATHAN'S APARTMENT-NIGHT
(Lights are low. Spot light on
SL and SR. SL are
Julia/Marco's Apartment. SR is
Jonathan's Apartment. )

Enter MARCO, apparently drunk. The
apartment is empty.

MARCO
Ah, good. The missus ain't home.
(MARCO's Speech is slurred)
Time to call up some peoples...

JONATHAN is looking through a phone
book for psychologists.

JONATHAN
P..P.. Lets see.. Phone Repair, physician's.. No.. Here it
is, Psychologists.

Picks up the phone as MARCO does the
same thing. JONATHAN is about to dial,
but hears MARCO dialing first. He
stops, and listens puzzled.

The phone rings 3 times before it is
answered.

MARCO
Hey, is this Ryan?

RYAN (O.S.)
Yeah.

MARCO
Hey Buddy, its Marco.

RYAN (O.S.)
Hey Marco! How you doing?

MARCO
Pretty Good, You?

RYAN (O.S.)
Eh, so-so. I haven't seen you in awhile. Not since you
stopped going to the bar.

MARCO
Yeah, there's a reason to that. Actually that's why I am
calling. I am inviting you to my wedding.

JONATHAN sits in his apartment
listening to the conversation through
his phone. MARCO is unaware of this.

RYAN (O.S.)
No way, your gettin' married!?

MARCO
Yeah man, I'm tying the knot.

RYAN (O.S.)
To Who?

MARCO
I'm marrying this broad named Julia.

RYAN (O.S.)
You mean that chick you picked up a few months ago? I thought
it wasn't serious.

MARCO
Yeah Yeah, It's not that serious.

RYAN (O.S.)
Not that serious!? You guys are getting married!

MARCO
So?

RYAN (O.S.)
What about all that stuff about to love and cherish.

MARCO
You want to know a little secret?

MARCOS speech is still slurred, but
still understandable.

RYAN (O.S.)
Sure..

MARCO
Well, here it is. I don't love Julia. Hell she annoys me,
with her Yakity Yakity Yak. All that nagging..

RYAN (O.S.)
Then why are you marrying her?

MARCO
Then why am I marrying her?
(He laughs)
Dude, Her parents are loaded. Her father owns that company
Texas Instruments

RYAN (O.S.)
Wait, you mean that huge ass calculator company.

MARCO
Yeah the calculator company. It's crazy! Do you know what her
parents are giving us as a wedding present?

RYAN (O.S.)
No, What?

MARCO
No guess.

RYAN (O.S.)
I don't know.

MARCO
Ok fine, their giving us a house! Man, its easy living for me
from now on.

RYAN (O.S.)
No way, a house!

MARCO
Yeah man...

MARCO Stops, hearing keys Jingling on
the door.

MARCO (cont'd)
Hey, I got to go. Talk to you later. Bye man.

As MARCO hangs up, spotlight turns off
leaving Julia/Marco's Apartment Black.
Only Jonathan's Apartment is still
seen. JONATHAN puts the phone down
silently, his eyes wide with shock. He
sits there, breathing deeply. He picks
up the phone again and dials a number.

JONATHAN
Hey, Ramos. Its me Jonathan. Hey, could you come over
tomorrow. I have something to tell you..

As he is talking into the phone,

FADE TO BLACK.

JONATHAN'S APARTMENT- MORNING
(Lights up. JONATHAN and RAMOS
are in the room, apparently
having a discussion.)

RAMOS
Are you sure it was Marco?

JONATHAN
Of course I am sure. I would know that bastards voice
anywhere.

RAMOS
Do you know how you heard him?

JONATHAN
The lines were crossed or something. You know these old
buildings. Herbert won't pay for renovations.

RAMOS
Herbert?

JONATHAN
The Landlord.

RAMOS
Ohhhh...

He looks around.

RAMOS (cont'd)
So, What are you going to do?

JONATHAN
About Herbert?

RAMOS
No you dip shit, about Julia and Marco.

JONATHAN
I don't know.. I guess I will tell her about Marco.

RAMOS
And?

JONATHAN
And what?

RAMOS
Are you going to tell her how you feel?

RAMOS gets up and crosses to JONATHAN

RAMOS (cont'd)
You owe it to her.

JONATHAN
Maybe.. I'm not really sure. I want to. God knows I do... but
its hard to just open up your feelings after hiding them for
so long.

RAMOS
Jonathan. My god. Just do it.

JULIA enters the room silently. Neither
JONATHAN nor RAMOS realizes she is
there.

JONATHAN
I don't think I can tell her. Not yet at least.

JULIA
Tell me what?

JONATHAN turns around in his
wheelchair. RAMOS pull up a chair for
JULIA.

JONATHAN
Nothing.. It's nothing.

JULIA sits in the chair, and faces
JONATHAN.

JULIA
It didn't sound like nothing from the way you said it.

RAMOS
Jonathan has something to tell you..

JONATHAN
(Cutting in)
About Marco.

JULIA
Yes?

JONATHAN
Well.. Last night I overheard Marco on the phone. I was
calling..someone, but I guess the lines were crossed.

JULIA
What did you hear?

JONATHAN
Well..I head him say that he was only marrying you for the
money.

JONATHAN paused, waiting for JULIAS
reaction. There was none.

JONATHAN (cont'd)
And.. That he really didn't love you.

JULIA sat there, emotionless.

JONATHAN (cont'd)
Julia?

JULIA
Is this some kind of cruel Joke Jonathan? Is this your idea
of funny?

JONATHAN
No, I am not lying. I swear to you.

JULIA
After all we have been through.

JONATHAN
I am not-

JULIA
(cutting off Jonathan)
How.. How could you.

JULIA gets up.

JULIA (cont'd)
I trusted you.

JULIA walks over to the door, looks
back once,

JULIA (cont'd)
Go to the wedding.. Only because I already said you were
going.

She leaves

JONATHAN
Good Job Ramos. Good freakin Job.

RAMOS
What did I do?

He sits down in JULIAS Vacant chair.

JONATHAN
Don't give me that, What did I do crap. You know exactly what
you did.

RAMOS
Jonathan. STOP. You brought this on yourself. You and your
damn Self Pity. Tell her the damn truth. That's the only way
you can fix this.

RAMOS gets up from the chair.

RAMOS (cont'd)
Think about that.

He leaves. JONATHAN sits in the room
alone.

FADE TO BLACK.

BAPTIST CHURCH- DAY OF WEDDING
(Lights are high. MARCO is
standing at SR dressed in a
suit. The shirt tail is
sticking out. Its obvious he
doesn't care. He is facing
stage left. There are chair
fashioned into rows. People
are siting in it dressed
Nicely. RAMOS is near the
front. A chair next to him is
empty. JONATHAN is nowhere to
be seen. A PRIEST is standing
next to MARCO. Music Begins.
It is the wedding march. JULIA
enters SL. She is wearing a
plain dress. Not much money
was spent on this wedding. Her
father is holding her arm as
they walk up to MARCO. He lets
go, and sits in the front.)

PRIEST
We are gathered here to unite Julia Richards and Marco
Delgado in marriage, which is held in honor among all people.
Those who enter into this relationship must learn to cherish
a mutual esteem and love; to bear with each other's strengths
and weaknesses; to comfort each other in sickness, trouble
and sorrow: With honesty to provide for each other, and to
live together as heirs of the grace of life. Who gives this
woman to be married to this man?

JULIAS FATHER stands up

JULIAS FATHER
I do.

PRIEST
If there is anyone present, who knows of any just cause why
this couple may not be lawfully joined in marriage, make it
now known or forever after keep your peace.

At this moment JONATHAN wheels himself
in.

JONATHAN
I have a just cause.

He wheels himself down the aisle.

PRIEST
And it is?

JONATHAN
Marco, Does not love Julia. I heard him say that myself.

The AUDIENCE(of the Wedding) gasps.
Whispering to each other

MARCO
He's lying, I would never say that. Not about Julia.

JONATHAN
Julia. You may have thought I was lying to you in the
apartment, and you had reason to think that. I haven't been
entirely truthful to you this entire time... but I am not
lying about this. Julia, look at me... how long have you
known me. How long have we been friends. Do you think I could
do this to you, Do you think I could ruin your big day,
without a reason? Look at me and tell me that I'm not telling
the truth.

MARCO
He is a fool, get him out of here.

No one moves.

JONATHAN
I would never lie to you.. Because... I love you.

MARCO moves toward JONATHAN

MARCO
I see that no one can get him out of here, so I will have to
do it myself.

He pushes JONATHAN and the wheelchair
falls over. Everyone gasps. JULIA runs
over.

JULIA
Why did you do that!?

MARCO
He wasn't supposed to fall..just, leave.

JULIA
Is this how you really are? A Jerk? Was he telling the truth?

MARCO
Why do you care? Lets just finish this thing up, and go on
our nice honeymoon. Isn't that what you want.

JULIA
No.. It's not. It...It's over.

MARCO
What!? What did you say? It's not over. No not by a long
shot. And this CRIPPLE

Kicks JONATHAN in the stomach

MARCO (cont'd)
Isn't going to stop that.

JONATHAN grunts in pain.

JULIA
Stop it Marco

He kicks JONATHAN again

JULIA (cont'd)
STOP!!

RAMOS gets up and tackles MARCO to the
ground, other people get up and help
RAMOS hold him down.

JULIA (cont'd)
Jonathan, are you OK.

JONATHAN struggles to get up. He gets
on his knees.

JONATHAN
Julia..I meant what I said. I love you.

JULIA laughs, tears in her eyes.

JULIA
I love you too.

She kisses him.

FADE TO BLACK.

IN JONATHAN'S APARTMENT-NIGHT
(JONATHAN is sitting in the
middle of the room. The lights
are dim. He is writing in his
journal like he was in the
first scene. )

JONATHAN
(writing)
It's funny how life works out. Once you reach rock bottom,
there is only one way to go. Up. And up I went. The doctors
say it's miraculous. I shouldn't be able to move my legs. I
shouldn't be able to feel the pain in them. But... I can.
They say that in two months I should be able to use crutches.
(reflects)
It really is funny how life works out. Zero Point... the
change it brings... it can be good, as well as bad. I guess I
got lucky.

He stops writing and closes the book.
JULIA enters the room.

JULIA
You coming to bed honey?

JONATHAN
Yeah, one second.

JULIA
OK.. Don't keep me waiting to long.

JULIA exits.

JONATHAN looks at the Journal,
thoughtfully. He wheels himself to the
trash, and puts the journal in it,
slowly, like it was a triumph for him.
He smiles, and wheels himself in the
direction JULIA had taken.

FADE TO BLACK.
