  For a game that has a major plot twist that all the characters grew up in the same orphanage, FFVIII really doesn't tell you much about that time. Nonetheless, this story feels right about how it would have been. Your characterisation of a young Seifer feels perfect; and it seems to fit dramatically for Irvine to be the person asking these questions, and experiencing these things. Above all that, of course, it was very cute.
