Vampires are here... and she's becoming one of them. How will he handle it? One-shot.
Early Sunsets Over Monroeville
By: Drareg Rie’ma
It was exactly 5:00 p.m. in Monroeville. The vampires were still not showing for there was still sunlight. But after forty-five minutes they would show again. They would bite again. Soon everybody in town would be bitten, would be vampires or would be killed.
Yes, vampires. There were vampires biting people, killing some people since the past three days. The people didn’t know how they suddenly arrived there, but when they saw them biting with those fangs, they knew since then that vampires were real.
Five people. Yes, there were only five people remaining who were not bitten.
He took her hand and led her inside the house. She just followed him, she didn’t know what to do, where he would take her but she didn’t care. She was with the man she loved, the man she wanted to be with for the rest of her life. She knew it from that first moment she saw him in the emergency room all scared like a little puppy, fearing for her life.
He didn’t care that she was one of those who were bitten. For him, she was still the same. Maybe the effect of the bite would show later, after the sunset. But he didn’t care. All he knew was he loved her truly, he loved her dearly, and no one could compare their love for someone with his love for her. He wanted to be with her forever, he knew it from that moment he saw her at the party.
It was dark inside his house. No one was inside, of course his parents had been bitten too. For the past days this house had been his hiding place, and when she still wasn’t bitten here was where she’d hide, with him of course.
He led her inside his room. “Let me cure your wounds,” he said, pointing to her wounded arm. But she was not the only one bruised. In fact all of them who were still alive had bruises and wounds all over their bodies, for battling, for running away, for finding hiding places.
“No, I’ll be okay. Let’s cure yours,” she said, taking from him the medicine kit he just picked up from the ground.
“No. Just sit down, okay? Let me do this, don’t meddle,” he said.
“Okay.” She sat down on the bed and he kneeled in front of her. He began to put medicines and band-aids over her wounds. She flinched at every touch of his hand, it was a good kind of flinch though, for she loved his touch.
When he was done he set the kit aside and held her hands. He looked her in the eye. “I love you,” he said. “Always and forever, till death and even beyond that.”
She smiled. “I love you, too. Always and forever, till death and even beyond that,” she replied. Then she leaned down and kissed him on the lips, and it happened…
Twenty minutes later they lay there, both sweaty and tired. But he was feeling good. They had made love… didn’t it mean she was still the same?
He looked over at her and ran his hand down the bite on her neck. She had fallen asleep but he could not. He knew that she was oblivious to the fact that she would be a vampire soon, too, like practically all the people in Monroeville.
It was such a great pain for him if she would be one, if she would forget him, if she would forget that she loved him. She was so delicate, so fragile, so lovely to be one. She was so innocent, she was only fifteen… why did it have to be her? Why did she have to be one of them?
It was okay for him if he was the one bitten. He would just kill himself. He had lived for twenty-five years anyway. But it was she, it was she who was bitten and not he. Well it was okay for him to get bitten by her, but then again, how about the four other friends he was protecting? The ones who told him to kill her because she will soon be a vampire…
He had run away with her when they told him that. They tried to follow him and explain but he wouldn’t listen… well he knew they were right anyway, but he didn’t want to do it, he was scared of losing her.
He looked at his wristwatch. It was 5:20 p.m. He only had twenty-five minutes left to be with the real her. He just stared at her as his mind made a flashback, of how they met…
It was five months ago when he and his friends attended a party. She was there. When he first saw her he had known since that she would be someone special. She had caught his eye and that was why he asked her to dance. She had agreed and they danced and talked. They both found out they had a lot in common.
After that night they continued seeing each other. They became official after two weeks. At first it was not love she was feeling, it was just attraction. Then the time came that she got sick. She was taken to the hospital for she fainted one night. It was he who called the ambulance. Just when they were taking her inside the emergency room, her eyes opened and she saw him sitting on a corner, looking at the people who were wheeling her away from him. Those beautiful hazel eyes of his, they were full of fear. She wanted to hold him that time, to somehow take away the pain and fear he was feeling. Then her eyes fell closed, but since then she knew that she had found the man she wanted to marry when the time comes…
Life was perfect for them for a little while. They were so happy… then they came and ruined it all. Those fucking vampires. Those fucking vampires he uses as metaphors for his fucking albums. Now she was one of them.
But it was his fault… it was his fault why she got bitten. They were hiding at one house, it was just last night… then someone was banging on the front door. It was his friends, calling their names. He left her inside what he thought was a safe room, then he let his friends came in. And then he heard her shout. They all rushed upstairs, and his friend shot the vampire who had bitten her. She was on the floor then, crying, not knowing what she would do. He was shocked as he picked her up.
“G, I got bitten… will I be one of them? What will I do? I don’t want to be like them, G, help me…” she had sobbed while burying her face on his chest and flung her arms around his neck.
“No, you will not be one of them. I promise. I love you, just trust me,” he had answered as a tear run down his face. He had held her closer and his friends gave him a sad look…
He knew now that he really had to kill her, he had to save his friends. Well he just needed some time alone with her. God he didn’t know he would sometime do that. “I’m going to kill the girl I love,” he thought as he looked at his clothes on the floor. Inside his jacket’s pocket was a gun.
“I asked you what were you thinking of, G. You didn’t answer me,” he heard her sweet voice say.
He snapped all his thoughts away, realizing that she was awake and she was looking at him. He looked at her, too, and saw her smiling. God her smile made it harder for him to even think of killing her.
“What’s the matter, G?” she asked, her smile turning into a worried frown.
“Nothing, Em. Let’s get up,” he said then kissed her temples.
“Okay.” She smiled. Then they both got up and dressed up. Suddenly, she felt a pang of pain in her heart and in her neck. Inside she felt panic rush to her veins. She had no idea of what was happening to her. She had to sit down to compose herself. “Oh… ouch,” she muttered.
He looked at her abruptly. “What’s the matter, Em?” he asked as he zipped his pants and walked over to her.
“I… I don’t know, G. I feel hurt. What’s happening?” she asked.
It caught him off guard. She was now transforming. The thing he didn’t want to happen was happening now. He couldn’t do anything about it, the only thing he could do was kill her or they would all be in trouble.
“G, am I sick?” she asked sadly.
He looked down on his feet. It was time to tell her everything, he knew that much. He looked at her again. “Em… remember, you got bitten?”
She was aghast. “Oh God… I’m becoming one of them, aren’t I?” she asked.
He looked at her and sadly nodded. She then buried her face in her hands and cried her heart out. For the next few minutes he just held her. He savored the moment because he knew all of it will soon be over. She would be taken away from him…
“You… you have to kill me, right?” she asked carefully then sniffed.
Sadly he kissed her hair. “Yes,” he whispered in her ear. He kissed it afterwards. Then she stopped crying.
She looked up at him and kissed his lips. Sweet, then hard… with all her emotions. He kissed her back with equal emotions. They both knew this would be their last kiss…
She pulled away when they could hardly breathe, then looked him in the eye. Her eyes were red and her face was blotchy. “G, I love you. Always and forever… till death and even beyond that,” she could barely say. The pain got even more painful, she then knew she would soon be a vampire.
“I love you, too, Em. Always and forever. Till death and even beyond that,” he replied.
She kissed him on the lips one last time. Then she pulled back and smiled. “Kill me now.”
Hesitantly and sadly, he took the pistol out of his pocket. They could both hear his friends outside, yelling at him that he had to do it. He ignored them. He blocked their voices…
He looked at the pistol, then he looked at her mournfully. She was smiling but there was sadness in her eyes. He aimed it at her head.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
After their last I-love-you’s, he pulled the trigger.
Everything became bright for Emily and everything became silent for Gerard.
He looked at his wristwatch. It was 5:40 p.m. He could hear nothing except his sobs and hiccups. He didn’t know when he started crying but well, all he knew was he was crying, and he killed his one and only Emily. His friends had already stopped yelling after they heard the gunshot, and the town was silent. His sob was echoing all throughout the place.
He looked at her, then he became weak, seeing the lifeless Emily fall to the bed. He fell to the ground, dropping the pistol off his hand, then using his remaining strength, he laid beside his lifeless Emily.
He was crying unstoppably. He killed her. He couldn’t believe that he had done it. It was just as if yesterday, they were laughing with all the other people. Then suddenly, vampires appear and he was counting her face among the living. And then she changed from one bite, and here she was, lying dead beside him. And he was the one who killed her.
He didn’t move. He just buried his face on her chest and hugged her, then he didn’t move anymore. He stayed there.
She was now dead. He took her life away. How could this happen? He just wanted to hold her close…
It’s all my fault all of these happened…
He sobbed even louder. “Emily…” he cried. Then he pulled back and looked at her. He could almost hear her telling him to come with her, he could almost see her inviting him to go with her wherever she had to go.
A weak smile touched his lips as he took the pistol from the floor. He aimed it at his head. “I love you,” he said then pulled the trigger.
The black-haired man fell beside the raven-haired girl, his arms loosely gripped around her waist.
Outside, Frank, Mikey, Bob and Ray looked upstairs at the saddest room in that house with tears in their eyes.
“He’s happy with her… isn’t he?” asked Frank.
“Yeah, he loves her too much to leave her,” Bob said.
“I guess it will just be the four of us now,” said Ray, wiping his tears.
“No, he will continue to watch us. He will still be there for us,” said Mikey.
“Yeah,” they all agreed.
“So much for this tour break in this old hometown of ours,” thought Mikey. He looked up at the room one last time, then smiled. “Old Monroeville. What a town.”
He adjusted his specs and they all walked away. No one knew where they were headed. But they were sure that Gerard and Emily will watch them anyway, lead them to the right way and help them get through this.
It was exactly 5:45 p.m. when the sun set, slightly illuminating inside the dark room where the two lay dead, creating an illusion of two lovers together in an endless dream.
