Sueprisingly enough I would have preferred Ron's death to Sirius'.
It would have largely spared us the train wreck of Ron/Hermione in HBP and DH, and frankly Ron was a huge twit in the entire series.
Ron's friendship always felt more conditional than it should have been due to his inferiority complex. -

An interesting, and quite plausible, AU. I'll tend to agree with mathiasgranger that I'd have preferred Ron's death to that of Sirius as Ron was far less of a friend and supporter of Harry than Sirius was (that bloody inferiority complex - or was it the knowledge/thought that he really was inferior?) and, and this is cheap of me, Ron's death at the DoM would've driven quite a wedge between Harry & Ginny and some witch worthy of him, at least as written (Hermione or Susan Bones are among my top choices) could've become his girlfriend (IMHO, Cho never had a chance after the end of the Tournament). -

Aint it a bitch to have survivors guilt! And oh yeah, whats that saying: Insight is 20-20 or the what if game will drive you mad! You got to learn to make a decision then live with it! And all in all, friends or not it was there decision to go with Harry! and one last thing that hole in his heart will deminish over time to where you hardly ever notice it anymore, just every once in a while you remember the good times and not the bad! But then again kids, had no business fighting that war, and dumbydork ought to be hung up to dry for manipulating Harry with all those stupid moves, leader of the light he aint! -

Interesting.
I have to agree that Ron would've maybe been a better sacrifice than Sirius. That essay's very interesting, and the hypothesis that Rowling had originally meant to go that way is rather plausible. I wonder if she saved Ron cos she realised she was into that bloody Ron/Hermione thing? (The which I don't understand; I mean, if she's so into the idea of Hermione (her avatar?) being with a redhead, why not set her up with Ginny? ;-)
The scene with Harry and Ginny and Hermione was particularly nice. Perhaps this _won't_ drive a wedge between Harry and Ginny, whatever happens romantically between them in the end. (And yes, being me, I'm thinking H/G/Hr threesome or a foursome with Luna. ;-) -

Interesting theory. After reading your essay, I would have to partially agree - except for the after the fact JKR infodump that Arthur Weasley was spared death (by Nagini) in OotP. I think that if she had (initially) planned on killing Arthur, killing Ron in the same book would have been overkill. I think if Ron was going to die, it would have been at the end of Book Sux - as indicated by his sacrifice in the chess match.
Great story, though. A most believable AU (that leads to a more intellegent and "determined to prepare" Harry). -

Interesting theory. After reading your essay, I would have to say I partially agree with you. According to JKR's (after the fact) infodump, Arthur Weasley was originally intended to die by Nagini in OotP and she "didn't have the heart" to do that (to Ron? to Harry? to herself?). So I think that if she had intended to kill off Ron, she probably had it set at the end of Book Sux - as indicated in his sacrifice in the "sixth move" of the chess match in PS.
An interesting story, though. A good AU. One where you could believe Harry would come out a little more intellegent, a little bit more "prepared for the future", a little bit less influenced by DoubleDumb.
thanks for this. -

Great theory!
Certainly plausible enough, and you managed to handle the denouement well. I guess with Percy ostracized and Ron dead, the Weasleys would be reasonable enough. (With the possible exception of Molly.)
