There was heavy ice outside, which had shut down the east coast. Just about every other school in the area was closed, but weather didn't interfere with Xavier's School for the Gifted, where both students and teachers lived in the same building as the classrooms.

This made most of the students very grumpy, and Charles had to fight the temptation to force them to listen.
