“Hello! My name is Professor Athini Acacia. Welcome to my lab. You are sixteen now, have gathered in a group of three, and as you are well aware, that means you are finally able to embark on your very own Pokèmon journey through the wonderful land of Kaneko. You’ll have a choice of three starter Pokèmon to pick from to begin with. As you journey, you’ll be able to battle and capture-”

“Mom, do we really have to do this?” Riley interrupted, squirming impatiently. The teenager was nearly taller than their mom by now, and Athini knew it wouldn’t be long before she was bypassed even with as tall as she was herself. The teen had long fiery red hair with green eyes, just like their father, who stood behind the waiting group quietly, helping out in the lab that day to see off his children.

“Of course we do. This is the formal introduction before you begin.” The Professor answered, trying to look stern, but with this being the first day of both her children’s Pokèmon journey, she found it hard to remove the smile from her lips. She ran her yellow eyes over the faces of the three children in front of her and couldn’t help but beam.

“Oh, come on Ry, quiet down. The sooner mom finishes her speech, the quicker we can get started.” Felix said, laughing at his sibling’s eagerness. Though it was Felix who had just turned sixteen, Riley had decided to wait a year for their younger brother to be old enough, so they could set out together. Felix was much shorter than the family that had adopted him, and his skin was a light peach compared to their caramel-colored own. He kept his hair short, with the bright blue tips longer and spiked.

“Professor, I have a question.” A dark skinned teenager asked. This girl was named Amelia. She lived on a farm in a town on the other side of the region, but her family hadn’t even lived in Kaneko for more than a few months. “Where I come from, children are able to start their journey when they turn ten. Why do the kids here have to be so much older?” She asked, referring to the minimum age requirement of sixteen for Trainer journey start.

“The lands here are a fair amount more dangerous. We have anywhere between uncontrollable wild fires and natural disasters, to highly difficult terrain, and some of the islands here even have ever shifting topography. The towns are so spread apart, as most of the land isn’t suitable for civilization. As well, Pokèmon around here tend to be more fierce and untrusting of humans.

“Lastly, though, the three Great Obori, our protectors, worry more about the preservation of the land as a whole, rather than protecting singular lives. It’s not unheard of for people and Pokémon to become injured or even loose their lives if one of them or their Encopic feels that the balance of our land may be in danger.” Professor Acacia finished with a serious look.

“My family has had the farm for years, though, and the Pokèmon we raise are native to these lands, even though we aren’t, but I’ve never had any trouble controlling them.” She answered, confusion lighting up in her bright orange eyes.

She was referring to the Fairy and Fire type Pokèmon, Burmutic that her family raised. It was a two and a half meter tall flightless bird, at its final evolution. They were an orange and pink long legged Pokémon with soft, fire retardant wool that was heavily sought after by the Rangers and Fire Forces, here and the world over. With their docile nature, swift speeds, and strong legs, these creatures also made fantastic Ride Pokémon as well, when tamed, helping all types of people traverse the difficult terrain in the Kaneko Region.

“While they are native to this region, the Burmutic on your farm are raised by people and far more domesticated than the wild Pokèmon around here. You may even come across this Burmutic and its previous evolutions in the wild and find that even they are dangerous.” The Professor answered patiently.

“I guess that makes sense. It is kind of odd that we are only allowed to travel as Trainers in groups of three or more though,” the girl answered, still looking put off.

“Hey, at least you can start today. I know waiting is hard, but I’d much rather be sure I’m ready for the journey than just be thrown out into the wild,” The normally shy Felix said kindly to his new friend, unbothered by her somewhat harsh tone, clearly too excited to care. “Besides, if we were allowed to start when we turned ten, Riley and I wouldn’t have had as much time to finish the classes at the academy. There was a load of very important information we could have missed, so by traveling with us, you won’t have to worry that you didn’t attend any classes.” He was a studious child, so he took a lot of the teachings in the academy to heart. This journey will certainly be a good learning experience for him, as the boy tended to spend more time indoors than out.

“Ugh. Don’t mention that place. Those were the hardest years of my life.” Riley said dramatically with a complaining laugh, referring to the two year course most young Trainers took before setting off. In truth, they did well in class too, but the tall teen was not a fan of book work, and rather preferred a hands-on take to education.

“It wasn’t that bad. I thought it was really fun to learn about all the Pokèmon in the region.” Felix responded, looking up at their sibling.

“Of course you would find it fun, your such a book-Weedle!” Riley laughed back, grabbing their brother over the shoulder and ruffling his blue and black hair teasingly.

“Alright, that’s enough you two. Just a moment ago you were complaining about the Professor being too long-winded, but now look who’s holding you back on your journey.” Their dad interjected, grabbing both his children by the shoulders and separating them with a laugh. “Now, let your mother finish, and maybe you can get started before the sun goes down.”

They both settled quickly at the gentle reprimand, and all the teenagers turn their eyes eagerly back to the tall blonde Professor.

“Right, where was I?” She said, looking around for a context clue. Her husband held a PokeBall up behind the head of the children, which made the Professor snap her fingers in remembrance. “Ah! Yes! Starters.”

Professor Acacia spun on her heel, and marched off towards a large shelf that housed the balls of many Pokémon. Carefully locating the ones needed for the introduction, she plucked three balls out of the indents on the unit.

“Here are the Pokémon you three will be choosing-“ but the phone suddenly lighting up and ringing loudly in her pocket distracted the woman. She glanced up at the eager faces in front of her. “It’s fine, they can leave me a message and I’ll call them back later.”

“Are you sure?” Felix asked, looking at his mother’s still lit pocket in concern. “What if it’s something important.”

“This is important too.” Athini replied. She brought her hand down, and then up, throwing the three balls into the air, releasing the creatures contained within.
