We are experiencing hotter temperatures, more extreme weather patterns, and rising sea levels. Scientists agree that impacts will become catastrophic unless we quickly start reducing fossil fuel pollution from the burning of oil, coal and natural gas. The Kyoto Protocol is an important first step and the only global regime to fight climate change. It is unacceptable that Canada's emissions have increased since Kyoto was signed and ratified. It would be a travesty for Canada to walk away from its international commitment. North America is falling behind, but meeting Kyoto targets is still possible. There are plenty of ways to improve energy efficiency, to increase use of renewable energy and opportunities to invest in green projects, which contribute to greenhouse gas reductions. Therefore, we the undersigned, call on the government of Canada and all Members of Parliament to support Bill C-288: An Act to ensure Canada meets its global climate change obligations under the Kyoto Protocol, that received first reading in the House of Commons on May 17, 2006. This legislation would oblige the federal government to establish and annually update a Climate Change Plan and make regulations that would ensure Canada meets its Kyoto target.
