It is 2004. Paul wants to see John again. The next morning he wakes us and he is back in 1965, in his old house, in his old bed and he has only one day to spend with his old friend.
Q Magazine - 1998
Q: "If John Lennon could come back for a day, how would you spend it with him?"
Paul: "In bed."
Paul was awake
He couldn't sleep, he was too busy thinking about John.
October 9th 2004. Over twenty years since his death. It seemed so long ago now.
But he still remembered.
It had only been two weeks since he'd spoken to John. It was a conversation on the phone he'd savoured every minute of. They just talked like they used to, about kids, about John's cats, just normal things friends talk about. It was weird because John hadn't spoken to him like that in years.
Maybe now they'd be closer together like they were back then
But then he got that phone call...
Paul turned over to the empty pillow beside him. He'd been sleeping alone for years now. The cancer had got worse and Linda hadn't pulled through. In the last few days he spent with her, he thought about what would happen next, what he would say to his kids, what he would do now she was gone. And even now, six years later, he still didn't really know.
He hated sleeping in an empty bed. It had no warmth, no comfort, no face to look at when he woke up in the morning. It was like part of him had been taken away.
He couldn't sleep.
He got up from his bed and went to the window, opening it and looking up at the sky. He loved the city, it was so beautiful at night. The world had changed so much since he was a boy.
Wow John he thought, watching the bright lights, the cars, the noise, I wander what you would make of the 21st century
The stars are bright tonight
John was one of those stars
He was up there, he knew he was. Up there with George and Brian and Stu.
"Happy birthday John" he said quietly, "And if you can hear me...please. I need to see you again"
And suddenly feeling tired, Paul went back to bed
