"Sometimes the best way to generate new ideas is to go out and learn something." -Bill Watterson
In "The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book", Watterson closes a piece about the dinosaurs in the strip with the quote in the topic title.

I'd just like to say that I think that's good advice. I've gotten plenty of story ideas for, say, "Ecco the Dolphin" just by poking around and learning weird facts about cetaceans and ocean life in general.
A lesson for all obsessive compulsives! :)

Then again, did I really have to go and study Sindarin Elvish in order to write a LOTR novella?

Oh well, three years later, novella not finished, but I've learned a lot. Three cheers for research.
