I believe this classifies as an "Oh, shit!!" situation. The trouble with sentient weapons/tools is that sometimes they act on their own, not as you expected them to do. If you've not been careful, it'll bite you. I think the Order and the wizarding world are about to find out that, comparatively, Tom was a pussycat.
