Oh I love it MORE! Bob is such a cutie pie. I don't know if you're planning to leave it a roller coaster of drama, but if you are, then the possibilities are like, Gerard getting all depressed and drunken and doing something horrid (e.g. raping her, hurting himself, etc.), or him and Bob not being friends anymore.
If it's not going to be dramatic, you could always do the cliche and find him another girlfriend. Or he could resign himself to never having her - which I don't think works, since it doesn't seem like he ever really loved her.
Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter.
