Another instance where Hermione rushes ahead and screws up. If she had been polite to the Hat, she might have had a shot, or if she had asked the hat to make sure to put her in the same house as Harry. It happens in most Redo plots, after all.
This one keeps surprising me. The Harry Solution to the good old Prisoner Dilemma, or this version of it, would take a master Logic to work out so fast. It'll put some intellectual pressure on the lad, I'm afraid.
