I agree with some others; this Harry has to deal with Vernon to be believeable. and did I miss it, or is there no Hedwig?

No you didn't miss it. Hagrid didn't take Harry to Diagon Alley so Harry didn't get Hedwig, yet.
The reason Harry didn't use magic on Vernon or number four is because Dumbledore had him so convinced that he needed the blood protection that it didn't even cross his mind to do anything that could jeopardize his 'welcome' there.
Harry will great his revenge but it won't be until around Christmas or so.
