The jumping from time period to time period was a bit disorientating. That said I found this story to be just flat sad.
Which I believe is what you were shooting for. While I've enjoyed your other works and have and will in the future again, reread them. This story will not be in that group.
Downers I don't need, go enough of that in the real world. Well written but not my cup of tea.
