AJ, don't let anything or anyone discourage you. If it's something you're really passionate about, then I know that you'll make it work.
Also, I am in the process of learning how to not suck at guitar. So I totally will try out for the band. And I can sing backup. (Darling, I am sure that your voice is lovely. It's definitely better than mine, don't worry.)
The thing about writing songs, is that I feel like it should start with lyrics. There are exceptions to that in my opinion, but yeah, I think that if you have the lyrics, and you can put it to a melody, you can build a song from there. (Okay I'm not an expert, and this is just my two crappy cents.)
