This seems almost more of a pitch for blues music than a separate story. The rest of this story isn't substantial enough for the grandfather anecdote to come off as duly non-corny.
Why would Rude work for Shinra when they'd trashed his hometown? It couldn't have been seven years before the game.
The last line is pretty strong.
