Ouch. Very painful, but so well-done. This really does capture the essence of a faded romance. I love the parenthetical notes throughout the story--it makes you feel that the speaker is trying so hard to be flowery and articulate (recapture the romance, perhaps?), but when it comes down to it, he recognizes the reality of the situation. The reality isn't nearly so pretty...but it's what's there.
