Her mother's question here doesn't make any sense to me. Was it in reference to some part of the dialog that was edited out, maybe? Why suddenly talking about the time of day?
"No, I understand that," her mother answered. "How about during the day?"
Other than that, it's a decent piece, but doesn't, IMO, stand terribly well on its own.
