by GuGoomba 0 reviews

A collection of 3 short "snippets" that I wrote in response to my messageboard's challenge to write a few paragraphs involving the theme of "Spring". These were the short themes I came up with. Enjoy.

Field of Flowers

Sally sighed as she leaned back on boulder she was seated on, looking up into the blue sky above her, smiling to herself as she saw a cloud that looked somewhat like a cherry blossom passing by overhead. Spring time was finally here, that much could be told my the wonderous smell from the Great Meadow's wildflowers filling the air. The snow had melted long before today, vanishing into the air as the sun cast its rays down upon Mobius. It was days like this that made the war effort seem trivial, and at the same time more important than ever.

Closing her eyes, she took in a little deeper breath, taking in the smells around her, savoring them as she halfway opened them again. The smells reminded her of before the war. How her father would take her out here to pick a bouquet for her mother, or as the centerfold for the night's dinner. It was memories like that which gave her the ability to keep up the fight. Memories that would hopefully one day be restored to the northern region of Mobius in the form of reality.

A slight gust broke through her dreamy state, returning her back to the real world as she sat back up, eyeing a certain blue hedgehog as he ran about the field, stopping for a couple of seconds in one spot before taking off to another area of the field, repeating this pattern for a good minute or so. As he finally returned to her, he held up a bundle of all kinds of flowers, arranged in such a way that she could see a heart shape to them as he handed them to her. She couldn't help but smile, leaning forward to kiss the hedgehog on his cheek before sliding off the rock. She then took his hand and leaned her head onto his shoulder as the two of them began a slow walk back towards Knothole Village.

The Hunt

The cool morning breeze wafted through Angel's dreadlocks, blowing them to the side slightly as she whitled at a nearly completed wooden sword. She had opted not to carry around her father's sword since arriving in this world, partly because she didn't want to accidently hurt someone with it, and partly because it brought back days of her training.

A small fit of laughter caught her attention as she looked over at where her violet chao Comet fluttered about, her red-tipped golden wings keeping her aloft as she searched both the ground and small bushes nearby in search of something with a small, reed-woven basket clutched between her two stubby hands. Cody's red chao Drake was with her, his own set of reptilian wings beating in rythem as he floated alongside of her, evidently helping Comet look for whatever it was she was searching for.

Another gust of wind blew through Angel's pink hair, blowing the three white tuffs in the front to the side for a couple of seconds. Angel shivered, though not from the cold, but rather from the memory that had entered her mind. Seeing Comet and Drake in their hunt for their hidden item had brought about a memory from Angel's past that had sent a chill down her spine to the very core of her heart, though less than a month ago, it would not have fazed her in the least.

She could still recall the vivid image of hunting down helpless rabbits, squirrles, or whatever kind of animal had been released into the enclosed area where she had honed her skills to see, hear, and even smell that which most Mobians could not. The thought of hunting them like that sickened her now, but at the time vengence and anger had ruled her entire being to the point that it did not matter to her what harm she was doing to the helpless animals.

A happy cry broke her from her thought as she looked back to where the two chao had come to a rest on the ground, each of them holding up an egg with purple polkadots painted on them, a carefree, joy-filled look on both of their faces. She smiled as she watched them put the two eggs in the basket Comet was carrying and move on in search of more. While the activity did bring back certain bad memories for the pink furred echidna, she couldn't help but be glad to know that through the human holiday that they were celebrating, she was making newer, better memories.

Spring Shower

A soft rumble in the air grew steadily louder as Mira looked up towards the overcast sky above, her dolphin-like tail slowly swinging up and down behind her as she felt a drop of water hit her right cheek, followed closely by a second on her forehead and a third on her left head frill, causing it to twitch slightly from the sudden touch. All at once the sky opened up its floodgates as a light but steady rain began to fall throughout the village. Mothers were calling in the young ones and their chao as the men of the village quickly set up rain barrels to catch the rainfall to store away for use on the crops during dry spells.

As the last of the barrels were set into place, the entire village seemed to withdraw into their dwellings, leaving the aquatic android by herself as she continued to stare up into the sky, blinking away the raindrops that fell into her eyes as she gazed upwards at the heavens above, a smile across her face. She always loved the feeling of water, whether it be as gentle and soft as the raindrops that were keeping up a continuous rythem against her leathery, synthetic skin or as harsh and rough as the waves of the ocean crashing themselves into her as she swam across its surface.

To be honest, she prefered this light shower to any other form of water not just because it was calm and soothing, but also because of what it brought in its wake. She held out her right hand, her gaze lowering to meet it as the green gem in her forehead flashed for an instant. Nearly two dozen raindrops came to a halt just above her palm as she used her ability to manipulate water to keep them aloft. She started at them with the same smile that had adorned her face since the rain had started, her mind lost in the depths of the raindrops that hovered above her open hand, not even noticing the village chief approaching from behind.

"You seem to be rather enjoying the weather we're having," he said, putting his hand on Mira's shoulder, startling her as she lost her concentration, the raindrops splashing to the ground below. She turned back to him, her dark blue eyes having a dreamy kind of look to them as she faced him. The old, violet furred echidna closed his dark green eyes and smiled at the female android.

"I am, honorable elder," she said, bowing to him slightly before she turned her attention skyward again. "I just can not help but love these spring rains. They bring me much joy."

"How so my child?" he asked. Mira smiled as she caught another set of raindrops above her palm.

"Water is a precious thing. Without it, life can not exist. It is because of rain that water is spread around the world, sustaining life where it is already established, and creating new life where none dwelled before," she said. She then let all but one of the raindrops fall to the ground. Holding up the last remaining one to her face, she gazed into it. "This tiny drop, while unable to bring life by itself, is but one of a billion pieces to a puzzle that fit together to create life. It is this reason I love the rain so much. It is bringer of new beginnings, a bringer of new joy."
